Enable Narayam Extension in all ml wikimedia wikis
Closed, DeclinedPublic

Description

Author: kirangopi84

Description:
Hi,

Please enable Narayam into all ml wiki projects as it was earlier. As per community consensus we disabled ULS across malayalam wikis, while adding the ULS into malayalam wikis Narayam is permanantly without asking to the community. Currently we don't have a typeing tool for type malayalam. Please fix it on priority.

Narayam is no longer supported. It will not be enabled on Wikimedia wikis. It is superseded by ULS. "ml" wikis chose to have ULS disabled recently.

Kiran: Please see http://www.mediawiki.org/wiki/Bugzilla/Fields for the meaning of the fields "Severity" and "Priority". Thanks.

As written before, Narayam is unmaintained and will not receive any fixes or support anymore (at least by the WMF).
If Narayam was deployed somewhere and something broke, it would require volunteers with knowledge of the codebase to create bugfixes.

We are opted out ULS as it is buggy, without community consense why development team disabled Narayam?

I don't think that the Wikimedia Foundation asks every single community for agreement before making decisions on allocating resources to projects.
If you like to discuss this general issue, https://meta.wikimedia.org/w/index.php?title=Wikimedia_Forum might be a better place as it's nothing specific about Narayam.

Andre:Thanks for your comment. But please read carefully the description of this bug, as we are not able to type/proceed it is a blocker issue for the community and it has to address quickly so the priority is High.

Please understand that WMF means not only paid developers it includes voluntry people like us, and the tool is not at all developed by the development team. It is develioped by non WMF devloper and it is succesfully tested it in malayalam wiki with a huge number of volunteers.

We have provided our community conseus for enabling Narayam earlier, who gives you right to overrule the community?

Please enable Narayam with immediate effect as we are not able to type in wiki. Making this bug as reopened.

Please see comment 1. This request will not be resolved.

the tool is not at all developed by the development team.

If that is the case, https://git.wikimedia.org/log/mediawiki%2Fextensions%2FNarayam.git
should list some "non-development team" maintainers that you could identify, so we can make sure that we talk about the same people.
Note that I don't refer to single contributed patches by developers but to significant activity (that's how I understand "maintainership").

It is develioped by non WMF devloper and it is succesfully tested it in
malayalam wiki with a huge number of volunteers.

While Narayam kind of worked in the past (and had some architectural issues that I won't repeat here), I refered to the future in my statement.

Please note that the Wikimedia Foundation will not deploy unmaintained software on its servers. If you are sure that Narayam is maintained, please provide statistics for this statement so everybody can evaluate the situation.

We have provided our community conseus for enabling Narayam earlier, who
gives you right to overrule the community?

I explained above that individual communities do not directly decide how WMF spends resources. I did not overrule somebody and I'd appreciate a less accusing tone here.

Please leave this ticket as RESOLVED WONTFIX until objections have been *fully* resolved. You can comment on this ticket without changing its status. Thanks for your understanding!

Andre, Sie: Aprreciate for your quick comments, but please takce care of poor volunteers situation. Couple of weeks back(Before ULS installation) we have worked on a good tool and we didn't face any issues, but when the ULS is installed we are facing large number of issues and it affects our edit counts marginally and it reduced to 50 %. We are appreciating your efforts for implementing the new tools system but it won't affect the normal flow of the community members. We have noted about 12 issues in ULS that is why we requested for disable the ULS. But it doesn't mean we are completly opt the ULS out. As per the bug the we requested 51019 to disable the ULS by default it doesn't mean we are moved away from ULS but the bug is fixed in a wrong way. So I am requesting you again please install NArayam extension untill all the issues in ULS got fixed.

See objections in comment 7 that need to be answered first.
