Make Devanagari Transliteration as the default input method for sa.wikipedia.
There is currently no way to set an input method as the default. Instead, input methods can be reordered, as was done for the Santali language. See example: T372146.

Make Devanagari Transliteration as the default input method for sa.wikipedia.
There is currently no way to set an input method as the default. Instead, input methods can be reordered, as was done for the Santali language. See example: T372146.
Hello, the input methods are all set as - user's system keyboard. This ensures flexibility for the users to select any of the available options or their own system keyboards (which may already have been locally configured to be used for Devanagari input). If they choose to use any of the input methods available through ULS, it will be used for subsequent visits as well, until they clear the browser cache.
The selection can be done using the Universal Language Selector's panel (can be displayed using the cog icon next to the interlanguage links on the Sanskrit Wikipedia). Input Methods can be selected by users even if they are not logged-in.
Hope this helps. We would really appreciate more feedback that will help us understand better if we can help any further in this matter. Thanks.
Apologies, my bad. I did not intend to change the status of the bug. Comment #2 should be considered as inputs from Language Engineering (as requested on comment #1), who maintain Universal Language Selector that provides the input methods.
Yes. It is understood that Sanskrit Language could be selected from the selector panel. Our view is that, once an user enters Sa. Wikipedia, Sanskrit should be available as a default language instead of the longer route of language selection.
At present, after entering Sanskrit Wikipedia, one has to select Sanskrit Language (through Ctrl M) for getting Sanskrit Lipi. It would be in the best interest of all users if they (any user new or experienced) could access Sanskrit Lipi as a default language and not vice versa.
Therefore we appeal to the Technical team to make this change which could benefit the new users and users who are not very familiar with the language selection processes.
@Shubha @vssun9 the language eng. is worried such change would conflict with software customization already put in place by the contributor at system level.
This seems a sensible argument to keep the ULS approach. Did your views evolve on this matter in one year?
In Hindi wiki Devanagari Transliteration is the default input method. If that is possible in Hindi, I think there will not be any conflict here. It makes many things easier. Please look into this.
ULS input methods does not force any input method as default in any wiki. In Hindi wikipedia, probably it is your user preferences. Try in anonymous mode. System input method is default as you can see in screenshot
Thank you for tagging this task with good first task for Wikimedia newcomers!
Newcomers often may not be aware of things that may seem obvious to seasoned contributors, so please take a moment to reflect on how this task might look to somebody who has never contributed to Wikimedia projects.
A good first task is a self-contained, non-controversial task with a clear approach. It should be well-described with pointers to help a completely new contributor, for example it should clearly pointed to the codebase URL and provide clear steps to help a contributor get setup for success. We've included some guidelines at https://phabricator.wikimedia.org/tag/good_first_task/ !
Thank you for helping us drive new contributions to our projects <3
Hi, I am a new developer here, can someone please assign me to this issue?
@srishakatux I don't know who to tag
also I checked both hindi as well as sanskrit page and tried editing some page. Input mode is set as sa-transliteration by default for sanskrit pages just like in hindi pages.
Does this issue need to remain open ?
@Budhachandra: Hi and welcome! Please see https://www.mediawiki.org/wiki/New_Developers#Communication_tips , no need to tag anyone. :)
@Budhachandra Thanks for your interest in working on this task. Based on the prior discussion on this task, the keyboard input order here needs to be modified. sa-transliteration needs to be moved to the end of the list.
As @santhosh explained, we don't enable the tool by default in any language for any wiki.
