Account creation by email often winds up marked as spam
Open, LowPublic

Description

Apparently "its contents are typical for spam e-mails".

While this won't be an issue for emails coming established domains such as the Wikimedia projects and whatnot use, for smaller projects it can be quite problematic.

What does "often" mean? Any numbers? Any software / mail provider info?
Any headers of spam software available rating the email content / threshold?

It's happened at least twice from uncyclomedia with gmail. I'm afraid I don't really know what the rest of that means.

I can confirm this happening, as it has happened on all Brickimedia (http://www.brickimedia.org) projects since it launched. Not only is it an issue with account creation emails but also new talk page notification emails and every other type of email I've seen MediaWiki send (i.e. SocialProfile-related ones, Echo-related ones, etc).

Apparently "its contents are typical for spam e-mails".

I don't see how this is solvable.
Any proposals how to make its content not typical for spam emails, which is not about dropping all links or adding random words, so we don't end up looking like spam mail that tries to work around looking like spam mail?

This is a confirmed bug (at least two wikifarms have experienced it), and makes running a not-super-modified MediaWiki installation difficult.

Emails being marked as spam by one of the largest email providers is definitely not low priority, nor is it an "enhancement" request.

Might require talking to some people from Google to see what they recommend doing. Or see what other open source projects do to work around this, as MW isn't the only one that sends automated emails like this.

It would also be nice to see if other MW users have experienced similar issues.

Funny, I've never once had my account creation e-mails (WMF or otherwise) ever marked as spam by Gmail or any other provider for that matter.

I don't doubt the reporters that it's happening to them, but let's not make sweeping generalizations about running MediaWiki without more data :)

Probably whatever valid issue involved here also affects bug 56414.

This might be due to wrong headers like

From: testwiki <apache@localhost>

I just checked my inbox, and I found things like this coming up. If a proper address is unset, the mailer should use $wgSMTP['username']@$wgSMTP['host'] or something like that, and not allowing sending From 'apache@localhost' which can look like SPAM.
