Table sorting for number values should ignore approximate/estimate "~" character

Sorting of a numerical column breaks when ~ is used to denote an estimated figure, such as ~36, seen in this example screenshot:

I first noticed this on the Ebola page:

It looks like "~36" is currently being calculated as 0.

Use data-sort-value="36" on the table field.

It looks you are using jquery table sorter? Is it possible for me to submit a patch myself?
