Provide three editing labels ("Edit", "Edit source" and "Edit beta") on it.wp
Open, LowestPublic

Description

Hello. As discussed in :it:Discussioni_MediaWiki:Visualeditor-ca-editsource we'd need a way to get the same editing labels of en.wiki (in italian, obviously), that are "Edit", "Edit source" and "Edit beta":

 • When VE is disabled by user, show these labels: "EDIT" (for wikitext)
 • When VE is enabled, show these labels: "EDIT SOURCE" (for wikitext), "EDIT BETA" (for VE)

Now on it.wiki there are "Modifica sorgente" (edit source) for the classic edit when VE is off and "Modifica" (edit) both for the VE edit and for the classic edit when VE is enabled. There's a way to have three different labels to change according to the consensus that emerged?

Thanks,
Horcrux92

P.S. Sorry for the probably erroneous categorization.

Hi,
what would "Edit Beta" do if you already have the two other buttons?
Which problem do you try to solve? What's the URL to the discussion?

(In reply to Andre Klapper from comment #1)

Hi,
what would "Edit Beta" do if you already have the two other buttons?
Which problem do you try to solve? What's the URL to the discussion?

https://it.wikipedia.org/wiki/Discussioni_MediaWiki:Visualeditor-ca-editsource

We would like to:

 1. edit the label "Modifica" (edit) in "Modifica visuale" (visual edit) for the edit made with VE;
 2. edit the label "Modifica sorgente" (edit source) in "Modifica" (edit) for the classic edit (when VE is enabled);
 3. mantain the label "Modifica" for the classic edit (when VE is disabled);

And, if I have correctly understood, the 1 and the 3 are impossible to do together, because both of them refer to MediaWiki:Visualeditor-ca-editsource.

The same goes for the label [edit] near the section titles.

If it can be useful, I forget to say that on en.wiki (as you may know) VE is disabled by default, while on it.wiki it's enabled by default.

My question "Which problem do you try to solve?" is still unanswered though...

The problem is that we cannot turn the label "Edit" in "Vidual edit" without changing the same label for who has got VE off.

For us this is a problem, maybe not to big but I thought you would have been able to solve it.

The problem is that we cannot turn the label "Edit" in "Vidual edit" without changing the same label for who has got VE off.

I understand that part, but why do you want to turn "Edit" into "Visual edit"? The intention behind this would be welcome and why you think that it's not more confusing.

Because "edit" is ambiguous. Why the basic "edit" should be the VE-mode?

We discussed it a lot (as can you see in the page that I linked in the first post) and we'd like to be able to put into practice our decisions.

The real question I'd like to make is: why on en.wiki it's possible to have three distinct labels (two for VE-mode on and one for VE-mode off) and on it.wiki it is not?

Because "edit" is ambiguous.

If that's ambiguous then why request three labels, instead of two that are not ambiguous (classic wikitext editing, VE editing)?

The third one would appear when VE is off and must be independent from the other two (like on en.wiki).

Instead of quote only four words, I please you to try to answer to my two questions.

Sorry but I'm getting lost here (plus I don't know implementation details as I'm not a developer).

Could you please edit the task description here and finish these two sentences:

 • When VE is off: Show these labels in this order: ...
 • When VE is on, show these labels in this order: ...

plus for the case of just displaying "Edit", please also explain what "Edit" would do (either wikitext or VE).
That might things less confusing here. Sorry. :-/

Maybe I should give up...

 • When VE is disabled by user, show these labels: EDIT
 • When VE is enabled, show these labels: EDIT SOURCE, EDIT BETA

EDIT would open the classic edit mode, that is the wikitext editing (ovviously, since VE is disabled).

The labels' names are indicative (they would be editable in the MediaWiki namespace) and I don't care about the order.

Why it is so difficult to understand? It would be the same setting of en.wiki.

It was difficult to understand because I assumed you want to potentially display three labels. Initial description wasn't entirely clear. Alright then, thanks for clarifying and your patience :)

Thank to you.
My probable guilt is I haven't got a very wide english lexicon, so the repetitions in the sentences may be confusing.
