Document definitions of alert, message, and notification in qqq and on MediaWiki.org
Closed, ResolvedPublic

Description

Originally posted at translatewiki.net [1] but no reply there so I'm lifting it here instead.

There is insufficient information about what an "alert" is in this context and how it differs from "messages" and "notifications"? Without this information accurate translations are difficult.

Do I understand things right if:

  • message = discussion messages
  • notifications = all other types of updates (thanks, mentions, links)
  • alerts = the indicator that you have new notifications+messages (anything non-flow)

Currently Hovering over the notification number says "Your notifications" The flyout then says "Alerts" followed by a list of the notifications which ends with "all notifications". I.e. it is still extremely unclear why the Alerts terminology is needed why it cannot simply be called notification.

It sounds like you don't have any Flow messages yet. Try watching a Flow page (even just temporarily to see what I mean) like https://www.mediawiki.org/wiki/Talk:Flow .

Thanks. I've now done that and it clarified a bit. From this I instead conclude that:

  • message = anything triggered by Flow (or at least new posts on watched topics)
  • alerts = anything triggered by non-Flow (including messages left on the users talk page)
  • notifications = any of the above.

If that is the case then alerts essentially become "system messages" (which is clearly distinguishable from notifications).

Even so it would be good to have a clear definition of the three terms and how they differ from the Echo-team. That is crucial even, in order to make any type of accurate translation.

Exactly the same thing was an issue previously with the new Flow concepts https://bugzilla.wikimedia.org/show_bug.cgi?id=67967

Yes, I believe that's accurate.

I would say that e.g. a mention is both an alert and a notification. However, I understand a literal translation of 'alert' may not work in all languages.

Even so it would be good to have a clear definition of the three terms and
how they differ from the Echo-team.

Can I clarify the above further? Our team (Core Features) works on both Flow and Echo.

Suppression is not a new Flow concept. It has existed for regular wikitext pages (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia:Suppression) for quite some time.

Thanks for the clarifications, this should help with the Swedish translation.

I guess the best would be to add the terminology to the extension page(s) on mw.org (an own section?), that is probably where other translators (and others) are the most likely to come looking for them. Until we get a glossary function in translatewiki.net I guess mw.org and solutions such as Wikidata:Glossary will be our best bet.
