Oh, now it proceeds to rendering again.

I think I get this message on any Wikipedia now when trying to "Download as PDF".

Not the same issue. https://wikitech.wikimedia.org/wiki/Incident_documentation/20141126-ocg

Might be, but " Book rendering failed: There was an error while attempting to render your book" was indeed the message I got. Thanks for the link.

That's not the same issue. EPUB and ODT formats are disabled, why do you expect those links to work?

The EPUB and ODT versions are still linked from templates, such as
https://pt.wikibooks.org/wiki/Template:Livro_gravado
https://pt.wikipedia.org/wiki/Template:Livro_gravado
https://es.wikipedia.org/wiki/Template:Libro_guardado
and end users have no way to know that they are disabled

In fact, at least the error message should be different, or new users will keep getting confused by these errors, and thinking Wikibooks's software is not good enough to be used for their purposes.

As already announced in Tech News, OfflineContentGenerator (OCG) will not be used anymore after October 1st, 2017 on Wikimedia sites. OCG will be replaced by Electron. You can read more on mediawiki.org.

Declining this task as "The Wikimedia Foundation's book rendering service has been withdrawn", plus OCG has been dead for years and superseded by Proton and Electron-PDFs on Wikimedia servers. If there is still an issue with currently available PDF export on Wikimedia servers, then please file a new ticket with updated information and steps to reproduce. Thanks!
