Education Program article log should be an event for EP page not article
Closed, DeclinedPublic

Description

The log is of interest to the EP page and should be an event for it instead of the article, otherwise the people working on it have no way to know about those (the logs are spread out over plenty of articles). On the other hand, editors uninvolved in the EP who are watching the affected articles get all those notifications but it's of no interest to them, we've got repeated complaints about those.

I'm interested in the details of the complaints, which I haven't heard of before.

The intention is for users who watch an article to see when a student editor signs up to edit it, so they will understand the context (and be able to find the course page) when that user starts editing.

A few VPT threads :

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia:Village_pump_%28technical%29#.22Education_Program_article_log.22_watchlist_link_broken

I don't think that this can work as intended. If a student actually starts to edit the article at some point in time, then 99% of the time, those who watch the article won't notice or remember it was the same user who triggered the log entry by then. Anyway, if they're interested in context on the user, they will check their contribs, and immediately be made aware that they're a student and find the course page like that. So it just creates unnecessary log entries, and if there are users bothered enough so as to go ask at VPT how to hide them, well they're probably only the tip of the iceberg.

Thanks much. In some cases, I've seen those logs come in handy, but now that Special:Contributions show which course a user in enrolled in, I don't think we'd lose too much by changing the log behavior as you propose.

Raising priority in light of watchlist spam issues. Here's an example :

Also noting that student edits would be highlighted by way of a tag added by the extension itself, or failing that, by a bot when bot tagging will be implemented, negating any potential usefulness of those log entries.
