Log success rate for UploadWizard alternatives
Open, LowPublic

Description

Migrated from: https://wikimedia.mingle.thoughtworks.com/projects/multimedia/cards/635

Narrative

As a manager, I can know what is the "price" of not using UploadWizard

E.g. if we don't support browser X, from which Y uploads a month are made, but redirect to Special:Upload instead, we will lose Y*(1-successRate) uploads

As a community member, I can understand what are the reasons Special:Upload / horrible local upload hacks should be replaced by UploadWizard

Acceptance Criteria

  • add success rate logging to Special:Upload (we don't plan on improving it, so just log the minimal amount of information: one event when the user enters, another event when the upload is successful)
  • (optionally)add success rate logging to various customized upload interfaces:uselang Special:Upload hack on Commons, old JS wizard thing on Commons, File Upload Wizard on enwiki

We're going to start with just the biggest one first (I guess Special:Upload)

That's not going to mean much: many open an action or special page just to give a look, not because they have an intention to do something.

I think we make decisions like browser support based more on total number of users, not necessarily users of a particular sort, so this is at the very least low priority, maybe worth closing on principle.

I think this would be quite interesting. Even if only to brag about how great UploadWizard is. (Or to seriously reconsider our priorities if it turns out it's not so great.)

This is probably true, but I imagine the it applies to Special:UploadWizard the same as to Special:Upload.

How to verify such an assumption?

I imagine we'd have to do some "invasive" logging of user actions (such as logging time spent on the page, or where exactly they clicked). I don't think we want to do that, so I suggest just assuming it as probably true.
