Provide a link to 'Help' or 'About Media Viewer' pages
Closed, DeclinedPublic

Description

Migrated from: https://wikimedia.mingle.thoughtworks.com/projects/multimedia/cards/882

Narrative

As a user, I can get help or learn more about Media Viewer, so that I can understand how it works or troubleshoot issues.

Note: We are looking fora design that could work above the fold when the below-the-fold info is removed.

Acceptance Criteria

  • Provide a link or icon to 'Help' or 'About Media Viewer' pages
  • This could be placed below the image and its metadata, in a discrete but accessible location.

Design notes

Some mockups to explore some options (as indicated above, still need discussion):

Option A: Integrating help into the "settings" panel. Since the settings panel was used only for disabling, it may requires some adjustments (to make it clear that help is not about disabling but general) which we should test they don't interfere with the disable/enable workflow:

Option B: Add a help icon with a dedicated panel. The main drawback id that the help icon adds clutter to the metadata area for functionality that i rarely needed on a daily basis.

Once the user clicks on help, a summarised version is presented with links to get to more:

I added some exploratory mockups, but as noted I need more information on the issues that originated the creation of this card.

Pau, to answer your question below, the purpose of this proposal is to have a design that could work above the fold when the below-the-fold info is removed.

Pau question: This still needs some discussion about the purpose of the proposal. We already provide help links, and different things have been discussed about them. Is the purpose make them easier to access? more informative? have a design that could work above the fold in case the below-the-fold info if removed?

Is this still relevant?
According to our latest data (as shown here: http://i.imgur.com/5CsPapH.png ), users are accessing the below the fold area more than twice the times they click on the blue prominent "more details" button. Which may indicate they are confortable accessing the below the fold area, and keeping it (with the help links) seems the right thing to do (at least for now).

Tgr lowered the priority of this task from High to Medium.Dec 11 2014, 12:45 AM

Lowering priority as we do not plan to work on this anytime soon.

Mass-removing the Multimedia tag from MediaViewer tasks, as this is now being worked on by the Reading department, not Editing's Multimedia team.
