Review messaging and user experience for user errors for which dropping out of the upload funnel is unavoidable (e.g. user uploads forbidden file type). Is the error message easy to understand? Does it point to the relevant policy? Does it identify possible workarounds or alternatives?

Not specifically. Market and/or generative research on better ways to retain users' engagement whilst kicking them out of the funnel would be very helpful, but there is no specific deadline on this work.
Thanks for the information, @Jdforrester-WMF. It sounds like this isn't (currently) a research request from a product team, so I'm removing Design-Research-Backlog for now. It can always be re-added when a product owner has a concrete research ask and they want to collaborate with us.
