Special:MyLanguage should have a way to redirect to the fallback language if there is no translation
Closed, DuplicatePublic

Description

If, for example, we want to give a link from VisualEditor in the Afrikaans Wikipedia to the VE user guide in mediawiki.org, we can only link to the source page in English. It would be more convenient to link directly to Afrikaans, but Special:MyLanguage only works if the user defined the language in the preferences of the same wiki, and [[VisualEditor/User guide//af]] will appear like a non-existent page if there is no translation.

I can think of several options to fix this:

  • Make a non-existent sub-page redirect to the fallback language.
  • Make Special:MyLanguage work across wikis somehow.
  • Global cross-wiki language options (this would be Very Useful for a lot of other things).

This bug is vague. You can already link to [[mw:Special:MyLanguage/Page/af]] with the following caveats:

  • Set interface language in target wiki (if available) overrides the subpage request
  • It falls back directly to English.

I think there is a task for the fallback thing already.

Make Special:MyLanguage work across wikis somehow.

Do you mean, redirecting the user to another wiki?

@Amire80 Do you have more information that can be used by Nemo and Niklas for this?
