Show warning message if footnotes are broken
Closed, DuplicatePublic

Description

Incorrect footnotes generate error messages in the rendered text (Cite error).

Why not warn the user when trying to save a page with errors?

This would help keeping Category:Pages with incorrect ref formatting tidy.

Is there an example for "incorrect"? There are numerous tasks already (T68233, T28145, T74858, T17712) and it's unclear if this one is a duplicate of one of them. Please clarify.

There are several cases when this red error message appears in articles:

<ref name="x" /> is used but that reference isn't defined anywhere
<ref> tag is opened but </ref> is missing

Maybe more, I don't know.

My idea is, that users get a message (e.g. popup) when trying to save a page with that errors.

T68233 ssems to be the same concern.
