Note that the search seems to provide complete results, but VE never recognizes that the results are finished.

At my end, it does not complete the search and floods the console with aborted attempt:

I mentioned this to Chad, who pointed out that media/file storage on beta cluster is still on an NFS filesystem so searching media files always has been and always will be slow.

The problem is that as of January 16, VisualEditor stopped handling this situation gracefully and instead simply shows a constant in-process bar in the search text area, and does not display complete results.

You can see this for yourself:

  • on any page in beta labs, bring up VE, click Insert/Media, and search for "duck".
  • see the progress bar never end and two pictures with ducks
  • click a picture
  • wait a few seconds
  • click "Back" in the Media inspector
  • see many many duck pictures that VE never displayed for the original search

so searching media files always has been and always will be slow.

(Until we setup a swift machine in beta cluster :) )

True, but I am still concerned (albeit in a hand-wavy non-specific way) about non-Wikipedia wikis that may have slow Search and VE.

Except it works absolutely fine in actual localhost… this appears to be Beta Cluster specific. :-(

The timeout is 100s, and according to @Mooeypoo hasn't changed in the past year or so. The new interface uses roughly the same API queries (but asking for larger images).

I am pretty sure that on or around 16 January VE stopped handling this situation gracefully.

This seems to get resolved with https://gerrit.wikimedia.org/r/188725.
I am closing it for now,re-open if anyone experiences this issue.
