Wikipedia app user not aware of using Wikipedia Zero
Closed, ResolvedPublic

Description

The user observed in T88240 only discovered to be in a Wikipedia Zero program by seeing the checkbox in the settings of the app. He didn't remember ever doing something special other than downloading "the very normal Wikipedia app".

I don't know if Wikipedia Zero was really available with his Italian phone operator: perhaps the checkbox, even if enabled, wasn't doing anything. At any rate, users seems totally unaware of what service they are using or not, which also means statistics are skewed by including people who don't need Zero rating and by not including people who would need it but are unaware of it.

It is highly unlikely this user was actually on Wikipedia Zero; more likely they simply saw the setting and assumed it applied to them. This is a usability issue and best course of action may be to hide any Zero settings to non-Zero users.

How many users are there in Italy? IIRC Wind joined at some point?

more likely they simply saw the setting and assumed it applied to them.

We were watching the phone at the same time. The checkbox was checked, so it's only reasonable to believe the checkbox is doing what it says. :)

Dbrant subscribed.

Closing as fixed, since we will now show system notifications when the user enters a Zero network. (the notification will remain until the user dismisses it.)

Interesting. Where can I follow updates on the results of this notification? Will the notification contain some link?

This is tracked in T135450. This functionality is now available in the Alpha version of the app, and is just pending some final verbiage tweaks.

Thanks. That task only mentions that there is a link to a FAQ, can I have the URL?

@Nemo_bis: As a long term contributor in the i18n area I'm pretty sure you have the skills to answer your question yourself, or could go ahead yourself and make it translatable? :)

Not really, I don't know how the URLs are generated and whether they fallback to something else for non-English users. Mine is a genuine question.

or could go ahead yourself and make it translatable? :)

Definitely not. See T46871.
