Define responsibilities for different roles on team:

  • scrummaster
  • agile coach
  • manager

etc

@ggellerman @KLans_WMF @ksmith I think I need your help for this - how would you describe your roles as agile coach and scrummaster? what do you understand to be your responsibilities? also out of curiosity - how do you understand my role and what do you see as my responsibilities as manager? I'd like to start with your perspectives and build this out from there. If you prefer to do this synchronously, we can set up meeting.

The job I applied for was:

"Coach development teams, engineering managers, product owners, process owners, and stakeholders in sustainable and continually improving software delivery. Develop and leverage tools for measuring team health to drive team and organization-wide improvement. "

And that still sounds good to me.

The job req also said "Practice servant leadership while being a thought leader in the agile community and beyond", which I would probably try to reword a bit, or fold into the main text above.

How long/short are you wanting these descriptions to be? That would shade any attempts to take a stab at defining your role.

Ok, that helps. Rather than try to edit something here in phab comments, I have started a google doc. I can share it if that makes sense, or we could work collaboratively in some other medium.

I took a pass at the scrum master role!

On 3/24/15, Kevin and I took a pass at refining Scrum Master and Agile Coach. We'll review again today.

Kristen and I cleaned up the doc, so it's ready for another team review pass.

@ksmith @KLans_WMF @ggellerman I took a pass on the updated doc and it looks GREAT. I made some modifications to the manager section and am happy with it.

When you've all agreed on the scrum master/agile coach responsibilities - ship it!

I would love to have Joel's fresh eyes look the doc over before we call it final.

Hmm - would love to add my comment directly to the change I made reassigning it back to Kevin, but I guess that's also a wishlist feature for Phab? After much discussion with Kevin, I made relatively limited edits:

  • making it clear that all Scrum Master duties were confined to the scope of the Scrum team
  • making it explicit that the Scrum Master runs the actual Scrum stuff
  • a few other adjustments

left one or two open questions for Kevin.

Started writing up the next level of detail but, for now, moved it to https://docs.google.com/document/d/1dhW2VqDAJUl0G62DuGViyxoe1qrnGSGGpXm-PvSU3pg/edit.

Identified four potential audiences for this document:

  1. TPG, for clarifying what we do
  2. Teams, for understanding what to expect
  3. WMF, for understanding and negotiating roles and responsibilities
  4. prospective new hires

I think the Scrum Master section has a number of items that are more aspirational outcomes than direct responsibilities tied to job duties, but I think it's time for me to put this down.

No, the "Action" dropdown offers "Reassign / Claim" in addition to commenting

@JAufrecht the audiences you identified look right to me.

@ksmith I'm really liking where the document is at - are we ready to make it official and post it publicly? We can (and should) continue to iterate on these and refine as necessary.

I think it's "done enough" to ship.
