Special:Search suggestions on Wikidata are confusing
Closed, DeclinedPublic

Description

I watched a user search "source" and she was very confused by «Did you mean: sources» (actually «Forse cercavi: sources» + «Crea la pagina "Source" su questo wiki! Vedi anche i risultati della ricerca»; the red link to [[source]] doesn't help).

She ended up clicking the new suggestion, thinking it an error, but the new search was worse than the previous one. It might be wise to disable the "did you mean" and "you can create" parts when some results were found, especially if there is an exact match in label, description or alias. Suggestions are tailored for page titles, which Wikidata doesn't use.

Wikidata's search deserves some real design work. Right now it just gets whatever default Cirrus integration there is which isn't very wikidata specific.

If this were a "high" priority issue I'd argue we do it now. As is I argue we just jam this into part of an as yet unscheduled search effort.

We are currently working on cirrus integration. As part of that this should hopefully be improved. I am closing the task as it doesn't make sense to keep it around and it hasn't been touched in over 2 years.
