Watchlist number count in personal tools
Open, LowestPublic

Description

It'd be nice to have a number count next to "Watchlist" in the header, quite similar to the number count next to the username.
Since this number could be kinda large, we could do something like display "99+" when the notifications exceed 99.

Note this would have to be an optional preference, and also non-default for existing users, because many of us have thousands of pages on our watchlists and get an update every minute or so.

However, I did just stumble upon this extension which I think does basically what you want (untested, unsure how safe, etc) https://chrome.google.com/webstore/detail/wikipedia-watchlist/kmfbnpoggnebafhbanelibhdpbkkncfe?hl=en

So I guess this would be taking the number from https://github.com/wikimedia/mediawiki/blob/master/includes/watcheditem/WatchedItemStoreInterface.php#L306-L315 (WatchedItemStore::countUnreadNotifications)
And display it in the toolbar, which has its entry created at https://gerrit.wikimedia.org/g/mediawiki/core/+/0bacedd339e2f335f46a114d045a3a168447b9ae/includes/skins/SkinTemplate.php#1013
which currently just uses a simple text string https://gerrit.wikimedia.org/g/mediawiki/core/+/0bacedd339e2f335f46a114d045a3a168447b9ae/languages/i18n/en.json#2403

I suppose some sensible message variations for the regular case would be:

  • "Watchlist", for when there are no notifications
  • "Watchlist (12)", for when there are 12 notifications
  • "Watchlist (99+)", for when there are over 99?

(But this also appears different in the new skin

The new skin would need something extra in Vector

Regarding adding the numbers to this icon https://github.com/wikimedia/mediawiki-extensions-Echo/blob/master/includes/Hooks.php#L1185-L1210 could be used as an example.

cc @KStoller-WMF @Jdlrobson in case you have opinions on prioritizing this, otherwise leaving in Triaged as something we might get to some day.

Aren't most people's watchlists larger than 99 ? What problem are we trying to solve by having the number? cc @alexhollender_WMF
Note: if we do add the number I'd like web team to be involved in this as the Echo notification number has been causing us lots of issues and we'd want to standardize this some way.

@Jdlrobson I believe the intent is just for the "unseen changes" number to (optionally) appear, not the total count of watched-pages.
I can imagine this would be a useful feature for editors who only watchlist either: A few pages which rarely change (and thus they might not regularly check their watchlist without a nudge to do so); or, a few high-urgency pages where they want to be almost-immediately aware of a change.

Okay got it. Makes more sense now :)

@Niharika can you clarify what you mean by "similar to the number count next to the username" (from the task description)?

One thing that comes to mind is: if we show you an indicator of new/unseen changes on the watchlist icon, when you land on your watchlist page we should be marking these new/unseen changes differently, so you can kind of mentally map between the indicator and your watchlist. This is how we handle notices and alerts.

Related but separate: I wonder if we should think about creating a dropdown watchlist, similar to what we go for notices and alerts. It feels slightly weird to me that the other icons in the header lead to menus, and the watchlist icon is a link to a page.
