Citation tool in VE does not clearly indicate what it does (and what "DOI" is)
Closed, ResolvedPublic

Description

In visual editor, the new citation tool for URL/DOI pasting does not clearly indicate what this tool does for you. Also what is a DOI - most people have no idea (in a google search, it does not respond with an answer to what is DOI)? This tool is poorly designed and not user friendly. I keep accidentally clicking on the tool because of the proximity of the layout between this tool and the dropdown.

True.
DOI = Digital Object Identifier - http://www.doi.org/ , I think.

I would like to add that I attempted to put a 10 digit ISBN in this new VE citation field and it did not do anything (seems like that would have been an obvious add to this tool?).

More than 1/2 the time I have attempted to use this tool and it is missing large chunks of data for the citation (usually author name and date of source is the most obvious errors) which means I have to approve the entry, then re-edit the entry in order to make manual changes (the need to double click seems pointless, no longer making this tool a short cut).

Assigning to @Nirzar for an assessment (i.e. has this been resolved with the addition of the panel, does the message need to improved, is it simply declined, etc.)

@Mvolz this task was created 3 months ago (last comment is on April 24th). citation tool has undergone a redesign after that which addresses most of the issues here and has passed the usability test with 9/10 users understanding how to use it.

Let's close this task because it is about the old citation tool.
