close and delete the flowfunding mailing list
Closed, ResolvedPublic

Description

The flowfunding mailing list has not been active for a long time now. It was created to serve communication needs in the context of a particular past grant, and was not really used even then. At this point, it's just a spam target. As one of the list admins, I request that it be be closed. IMO, there's no need to preserve its (tiny) archive, either, but if we keep everything as policy, that's fine.

The list is here:

Event Timeline

Ijon raised the priority of this task from to Lowest.
Ijon updated the task description. (Show Details)
Ijon added a project: Wikimedia-Mailing-lists.
Ijon added a subscriber: Ijon.

This task is planned to be accomplished during the upcoming maintenance window on sodium, via T99098.

Closure is fine of course, but are we really going to delete the entire archive? That seems a pretty drastic measure. Especially considering that Flowfunding was meant to be an experiment from which future efforts should be able to draw their lessons, and that the usage of the list was by no means only trivial - e.g. I'm not sure where to find this summary elsewhere:
https://lists.wikimedia.org/pipermail/flowfunding/2013-March/000022.html

(See also https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Keep_history ; and to resort to blackmail: I may cite this bug in my upcoming talk at this year's Wikimania subtitled "A brief history of the Wikimedia Foundation as a learning organization" ;)

I stand corrected: I did not remember it had messages of substance such as the one @Tbayer pointed to. By all means let's keep the archive.

The archives are public, so I've followed the directions on https://wikitech.wikimedia.org/wiki/Lists.wikimedia.org#Disable_a_mailing_list which disables the list, but leaves the archives intact.

We probably need to improve the directions since the archives are not public anymore now.

https://lists.wikimedia.org/pipermail/FlowFunding
and
https://lists.wikimedia.org/pipermail/flowfunding.disabled.t97328
are both 404

The "listinfo" page still lists "FlowFunding" but if you follow that link you get "No such list flowfunding.disabled.t97328"

Ugh, good catch. To clarify, the list archives seem to be still up at their previous URLs, fortunately: https://lists.wikimedia.org/pipermail/flowfunding/ . But the link to the list description page there ("You can get more information about this list.") is broken too.

thanks! that's a lot better. i did not see that because of the capitalization (FlowFunding on listinfo and "flowfunding" here). so as long as they are accesible somehow that's good

Well, but that broke all the existing archive links, didn't it? And the "You can get more information about this list" link back to the list information page is still broken in the moved archive...
