Pasting a link target into the link editor doesn't open the suggestions list
Open, LowestPublic

Description

I tried VisualEditor earlier this evening. I was trying to create a link to "wikidata:Wikidata:Showcase items" from a page on the English Wikipedia. It seems that adding (certain types of?) interwiki links is not possible with VisualEditor currently. Every attempt I made with the link editor to add a link to "wikidata:Wikidata:Showcase items" failed miserably.

T51316: VisualEditor: It should be possible to create interwiki links and edit them subsequently says this issue is fixed, so I'm not really sure what's going on here.

I just tested this and it seemed to work for me. I'm not sure how to pinpoint the cause of the problem you encountered.

How did it fail (other than miserably)?

I was editing https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/User:MZMcBride/Favorites?veaction=edit in Chrome, version 42.0.2311.135 (64-bit).

When I try to make a link, the behavior seems to be erratic. I enter the text "wikidata:Wikidata:Showcase items" and when I press "Done" in the link box, I get different results. If I try to turn "Some" into a link, it links to the [[Some]] article, completely disregarding that I entered "wikidata:Wikidata:Showcase items" into the text input. If I try"External link" instead, I get "http://wikidata:Wikidata:Showcase items". Typically I'm using the "Search articles" option, I guess. I'm not sure how to further help.

When I click "edit this page" at https://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=User:Guillaume_(WMF)/sandbox&oldid=661438325 and I'm taken to https://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=User:Guillaume_(WMF)/sandbox&oldid=661438325&veaction=edit and then I click "test2", I see:

It seems interwiki links are masquerading as external links?

Okay, another issue that may explain some of the strange behavior: pasting "wiktionary:frog" into a link box doesn't trigger suggestions in the same way that typing "wiktionary:frog" into the link box does. If you paste text into the link box, you aren't shown the list of link suggestions, but I think that list may still be used. And the default link suggestion can be the [[Wiktionary]] article if you type in "wiktionary:frog".

If this default link suggestion box isn't appearing when text is pasted in but is still controlling the form submission, that may explain some of the strangeness here.
