Seppl2013 added a comment to T259427: Error creating thumbnail: File missing - again.

The issue is in the confusing message "File missing" - it's not true that the file is missing. The configuration is wrong and the pointer to the directory of files is not configured correctly. For a single such message it would not be a problem but if in "browse files" every single image shows the same misleading message "File missing" than that is a issue which should be fixed to allow administrators to get informed about the problem by their users much more quickly and more detailed than is the case right now.

@Xqt - thanks for looking into this. I am currently adding this to https://github.com/WolfgangFahl/py-3rdparty-mediawiki/issues/1 with https://github.com/WolfgangFahl/py-3rdparty-mediawiki/blob/master/wikibot/smw.py where I am happily using a standard Request for the time being to simplify things. It seems that APIGenerator adds caching handling and some legacy stuff as well as continuation - for the time being i'd focus more on the core functionality of unpacking the printrequest structures delivered and being able to use cut&paste for ask queries. The implementation will be mostly along the lines of https://github.com/BITPlan/com.bitplan.simplegraph/blob/master/simplegraph-smw/src/main/java/com/bitplan/simplegraph/smw/SmwSystem.java where this was already succesfully implemented in Java.

1.27 is the only version we can currently use. That is unsupported is very unfortunated but we can't migrate although we are trying hard. Too many breaking changes have been introduced in the last few months and we don not have the capacity to keep up with all these incompatible changes. Not being able to use the nuke extension does not help for the migration since we still have a lot of tests to do in which we generate pages and need to quickly remove them again.

The encryption in this case was motivated to be MediaWiki-Japi compatible which uses https://github.com/WolfgangFahl/py-3rdparty-mediawiki/blob/master/wikibot/crypt.py inspired by https://stackoverflow.com/questions/24168246/replicate-javas-pbewithmd5anddes-in-python-2-7 that's why it's important to be able to set the password via API and not from a configuration file. Yes - the environment is a Mediawiki 1.27.3 farm that is fully functional for half a dozen other wikis. Due to the farm aspect it won't be easy to switch off the extensions and we might have to retry the whole problem on a compatible other backup server where backups of the wikis run and the switching off will not harm production operations.

Seppl2013 added a comment to T244742: Why are images not in the filelist after patching Graphiz MediaWiki extension?.

The workaround is not consistently helping. I have a 1.33 wiki where it works see http://ebike.bitplan.com/index.php/GraphViz#Graph and others where it does not see http://royal-family.bitplan.com/index.php/GraphViz#Graph. The two wikis are in the same wiki family and share the same extensions ... so it must be some difference in the settings, permissions or other subtle detail that is effecting the behavior.

@Aklapper - @Hexmode and I are working on a fix for the extension. I think we need to move the repository. Could we get an official Wikimedia repository an Phabricator project for this extension please ...

@MarcoAurelio - oh - now i get it. Yes the repository is there and now its about how to get the extension into a useable state. Please create a project for that extension - it would be a good communication point for the Wikimedia community .

Quite a bit - it needs to be decided how the OpenJSCAD javascript code is going to be integrated with Mediawiki.
Shall this be a separate e.g. npm or webpack based installation?
Shall it be somehow invoked from the MediaWiki infrastructure?

Seppl2013 added a comment to T226616: Not compatible with MediaWiki 1.33 (img_description column doesn't exist).

@Samwilson: The assumption is that rendering with external programs like dot or openjscad is too costly a process to do it without caching. So there should be a copy of the rendered image in png, svg or whatever format readily available. If two users now render different versions of a page obviously there is a need for multiple version of such png and svg files. Cluterring the filesystem with these in a straight-forward manner seems awkward to me. I'd prefer to be able to put things under proper version control from an external tool. I don't like quite a few of the "do-it-yourself" approaches of mediawiki. If you use these solutions you are stuck with the mediawiki way of doing things instead of moving with the readily available APIs that are evolving "out there". I think the mediawiki architecture should be much more open and flexibile than simply having a two layer folder hierarchy that will make your https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Sous_la_Tour_Eiffel_1.jpg url end up as https://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/thumb/b/bd/Sous_la_Tour_Eiffel_1.jpg/800px-Sous_la_Tour_Eiffel_1.jpg when looking at the thumbnail of it - the b/bd part is just ridiculous as of 2019 since it's got technical reasons that should be hidden.

If there is an external command to render as with graphviz/plantuml and other extensions i think it's not much more of an effort to create a local git repository to keep track of the rendered/cached results - with tagging it would be quite easy to access the information and supply it for rendering. This approach would mean to abandon the approach of making the rendered results directly available as images via the mediawiki mechanisms in the traditional way images/e/f ... . Instead some kind of other access mechanism would be needed - i don't know whether this can be nicely intergrated with newer Mediawik APIs. The extra space needed for storage might be o.k. in quite a few use case scenarios. If a few extensions would share the base code for this the effort of creating such a solution might be worthwhile. Currently I'd also need such an approach for the plantuml and openjscad extensions.

As the committer of the PlantUML extension i see similar issues since PlantUML is based on graphviz. A common approach to image handling might be helpful here.

I assume the "old style" is gone and needs to be emulated with the "new style". The idea would be to get a compatible API to ease the migration for people that are using the "old style" API. So the new API should have "new style" as is + "old style" which obviously would need some kind of flag/handling to indicate that "old style" is actually wanted since it is still possible to do an old style call but it will fail and might be considered deprecated if not flagged as "yes I still want to use that API".
