@Kolossos: I understand, but I think we have to find some compromises here. Of course the standard OSM style is way too much of features an labels. But we need at least some basic labels for orientation (like parks, churches). These missing labels cannot come from Wikipedia overlay, because Wikipedia has another focus and another data quality (parks are mostly missing in Wikipedia, but there are thousands of Stolpersteine and such stuff, that floods the map).

This map shows only labels for streets and other transportation features, bus stations; but completely lacks POI's like churches, monuments etc.

Doesn't seem to work anymore. No tiles are provided.

Yurik, as you said, I think user-contributed geodata is an essential key to this problems. Because at Wikipedia we all want highly up-to-date maps and we want to have the ability to edit these maps on our needs.
PS: we have to differentiate between location maps and locator maps.
Beside the technical issues, discussed here, I like to note, that there are lot of reasons, why we use hand made maps today for the location maps:

- login per Wikimedia Commons
- choose a map (eg http://warper.wmflabs.org/maps/469)
- For maps uploaded by the same account there is a "Edit tab", for other maps this tab is missing

The same problem appears again.

ZoomViewer is working. Maybe wmflabs was down for some time. The ZoomViewer is inevitable for large scans and maps. Otherwise these images are practically not usable through MediaViewer right now. But this could be simply resolved by adding a link to ZoomViewer into the MediaViewer GUI. It's ready to use and don't need any development time.
