NealMcB added a comment to T344018: Improve the dump format for STV elections.

I'm delighted to see this task. My professional work includes election auditing, and transparency is of the utmost importance in elections.

NealMcB added a comment to T225146: Enquire about framadate timezone handling status.

Can this be re-opened to document ongoing interest within the Wikimedia user community and Wikimedia Foundation for time-zone support via an open-source scheduling app?

NealMcB added a comment to T288185: Rank "eliminated/not elected" candidates too in Single Transferable Vote.

@jrbs is right. Our goal of proportional representation is proper, and the math of how you achieve that means that there is no single well-defined ranking of individual candidates. What matters is whether the set of winners does a good job of representing the voters. You can't just replace any member with the results of calculations which already assume they were elected.

NealMcB added a comment to T309416: Allow re-tallying of STV elections.

The goal of a multi-winner election should be proportional representation. That means that if a candidate who is favored highly enough by some segment of the voters to get elected is found to not be eligible to serve, you don't just pick the next in line. You simply need to re-run the algorithm, after eliminating votes for all the ineligible candidates.

NealMcB added a comment to T118073: SecurePoll option to not allow voters to have ties in their order of preferences.

I think this is a bad idea. And the description here seems quite different than the wishlist item.

NealMcB added a comment to T308960: "Thrown out" votes in SecurePoll are difficult to distinguish from live votes.

As a color-blind person, I can't easily distinguish the red color in the proposal by @jrbs, and I'm a bit confused. It looks to me like the color of the text for JSutherland in that example is different from that for ClydeFranklin - but perhaps just because the background is different? What does the background signify? If the red color and the strikethru indications are redundant with each other, it's probably ok.
Thanks.

Fascinating. Would this be the first wikicite event? I see no notes of previous ones at https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Wikicite

NealMcB added a comment to T27875: Add interwiki prefix for ten.wikipedia.org.

Just to clarify, the prefix that was added is ":tenwiki:", not the original proposal. So an example of a link to a page there would be "[[:tenwiki:Boulder,_Colorado]]"

NealMcB added a comment to T114019: Dumps 2.0 for realz (planning/architecture session).

I agree with @Halfak that many of the big XML dumps are very difficult to use, and a single-line JSON format could be easily parallelized by users and would be much more convenient to parse in modern languages. They should also be compressed with bz2, not gz, as noted in T115222.
