The main problem is that it's very inconsistent; most of the pages are still working fine. Some pages break with <references/> but not <references /> (eg), some are broken with <references /> but not <references></references> (eg), others are broken with <references>...</references> but not <references /> (eg)

So a reader comes along and reads a page and things 'dang this is good stuff', and wants to make sure people know that they liked it. Maybe this alerts any of the pages editors that someone liked it, but the editors would be able to disassociate from such things, or disable the alert at all. And there would be no 'this editor has been thanked for these pages' data, just 'this page has been thanked this many times. Maybe with expiry due to significant edits since? Such that a user could thank again later?

or maybe a simple script which can remove all but the default language after install. (with potentially a secondary service to download user-selected languages if/when they chose to use them?)

Ahh yeah, my problem can be solved by either doing MediaWiki + version number tags or doing version number + not MediaWiki tags (querying 'not in 'MediaWiki tag')

@Ricordisamoa thank you for working my patch into a proper thing. I'm really glad there's some progress happening.

But what about when there is a task/bug which involves one of these tags (targeting it for a particular release) and another piece of software/library/etc which is targeted too?

It could also be used on Special:RecentChanges and most other page lists. Probably only as a user preference.

I also support dropping and also prefixing with MW as there's more than just mediawiki that might require versions at some point
