In the meantime, I've adapted a script (with help) that previously set UI languages. I've tested it (once), and it seems to work. Anyone else who's bothered by this bug might want to consider putting this in your /common.js or /global.js user script page:

As a result of T111663: Tag AWB edits, AWB uses Special:Tag to tag edits. But I thought that only shows if the local admins have created the tag?

Diberri's tool, which WikiProject Medicine used to use as its primary source, used to provide a ref name of pmid1234567 for citations it generated (from PMIDs).

Are we sure that opening an editor is the best behavior? Maybe it should take you to "This page doesn't currently exist; you can search this title in other pages or edit this page" first (or local equivalent; see https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Elkelkvnelknblekfnbeldkf for enwiki's version).

Perhaps only at SET (Single Edit Tab) wikis?

I can't reproduce this in Firefox 63 on macOS 10.13.6. I don't know whether the problem was solved (for example, a user script that got fixed) or if it's specific to older versions of Firefox, but I don't remember seeing this for months.

User:Popcornduff can reproduce this in Chrome at the English Wikipedia.

I can't reproduce this in Safari 12 on macOS 10.13. (It just ignores my hand-typed section headings.) Do you have browser information?

What problems exactly? My understanding is that the "classic toolbar" was removed for maintenance reasons. Given that we have to maintain WikiEditor one way or another, where it lives is less consequential.

This problem appears to have been resolved in (at least) Safari 12 on macOS High Sierra 10.13.

Such a bot has operated in the past: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia:Bots/Requests_for_approval/Polbot_8 I don't know if any bots are currently doing this.

T123778: When Converting a bare URL, just alter the contents, don't replace the reference from @Thryduulf looks similar, except that in one of those links, it appears to keep the named refs connected. A Regression, maybe? Or perhaps the order of the wikitext matters?

It must be more complicated than that? This edit seems to have worked.

I also had this happen when I tried to export a translation. I didn't try to disable the script, but it's the same sort of behavior, so I'm suspicious that it's the same cause.

Another point: You can reach this list of prefs on the mobile site, e.g., http://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Special:Preferences#mw-prefsection-editing, but they have no effect on the mobile site. So perhaps labeling them as "Editors (on the desktop site)" would be a good idea.

Mobile Web offers very few user preferences, and "Give me the non-Javascript editor even though I have Javascript running on my mobile device" is not one of them.

I think this is the "a per-user saved setting for menu preferences". The Special Characters item has already been moved out of the menu (for mostly unrelated reasons).

@JJMC89, these templates seem to have been imported to several wikis. There's a list at https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q52154408 I don't think any of these are in use, however. I wonder whether any other templates have the same complications?

Copyediting is (finally) done. If we want this marked for translation, then perhaps that should be a separate task (or re-open and re-assign this one).
