Yes. It is resolved. Thank you.
@Paladox yes, that works fine.
Going from 1.25.x to 1.27.x via several mediawiki-x.patch.gz files and git not picking up the case change seemed to be the cause.
I will try to switch our workflow to copying changes from mediawikis github mirror instead working with the tar files.
Currently we are on 1.27.1 but the history in our repo goes back to 1.25.3 (We store our setup including extensions in git).
When i download https://releases.wikimedia.org/mediawiki/1.23/mediawiki-1.23.15.tar.gz and unpack it, i can see that both files use a lowercase "l".
Development is indeed done on HFS+ (case insensitive) but deployment on ext3 (case sensitive).
It would seem odd if some install mechanism converted the lower case "l" from the tar.gz into an upper case... but it is definately SpecialUserlogin.php and SpecialUserlogout.php already in the tar file.

Any updates on this? I read through the comments on gerrit but i am afraid i have to admit that this goes much too deep into MediaWiki internals.
I never worked with it before and i do not think i can help you out on the open remarks.

Pretty much on the same day like kwisatz i finished a rewrite of Auth_remoteuser to use the SessionProvider API.
You can find it here: https://github.com/noris-network/mediawiki-extensions-sessionprovider-remoteuser
I hope i managed to keep it feature compatible with the old extension.
