The format may have changed from gif to png to svg but the idea is the same.

What you are saying is that developer convenience trumps user experience. It is nigh impossible for a user to edit MathML by hand. Any usable system must use something else, and that something else is TeX, nothing else having caught on in the past thirty-seven years. Insanity or not, TeX is inevitable. That does not make MathJax inevitable, of course, but it severely limits the possible use cases of MathML.

MathML is not useful as a markup language because it is so horrible for humans to write and all actual mathematicians use TeX.

MathML is NOT a solution. MathJax has been a working solution at every other major mathematics site for six years now.
