I can vouch for this - I'll be helping the museum work on bulk uploading using GLAM Wiki Toolset. I have Beta Commons GWToolset and administrator privileges to assist in this. Thanks for expediting!

+1 for creation for testing. Perhaps iron out the production issues later?

If we can get some advance notice on this, I just had a meeting with the new Smithsonian digitization head, and she is very keen to contribute models from 3d.si.edu to Commons, so they would be a great partner to showcase content from when this launches.

- This image of a Luger pistol is sometimes manually added to WP article infoboxes (like English), and sometimes auto-transcluded into infoboxes because it is listed as P18 in Wikidata (like Finnish) - https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File%3ALuger_P08_(6971793777).jpg

Yes, yes and yes. One of the challenges is that Commons seems to be the default crossroads for these types of projects, and they are (understandably) very conservative, not just with copyright but about adopting anything that will break functionality for all the projects that rely on it. For example, even getting 3D object upload working has been a long slog.

Not to be too snarky... but to my eyes, there's a whole sea of blank space under the username in that screen shot. The more the mobile interface remains a strict "reading" experience and nothing else, the more we risk bifurcating the community into the power desktop users with lots of capabilities, and mobile users with very few.

FYI, we are now doing this via the Schnittserver and Internet Archive. Not ideal, but at least there is a solution.
Yes, yes a thousand times (or at least 10x) yes. It's fairly typical for a 90 minute session at a conference (ie. Wikimania) to take up about 2 gbytes in a video. So just lifting this to 2 Gbytes would be a tremendous help. Right now we are suffering in trying to get conferences videos up in a timely manner.
