I can understand not submitting a gerrit patch yet, but can you fork https://github.com/wikimedia/mediawiki-extensions-3D and rebase your changes onto a fork ? That makes it a lot easier to evaluate what you are proposing.

As you have figured out headless-gl route is a hits a dead end as it doesn´t support WEBGL2.

For GLTF files, these libraries might be of help.
