Looking at https://id.wikiquote.org/wiki/MediaWiki:Cite-tool-definition.json and https://id.wikiquote.org/wiki/MediaWiki:Citoid-template-type-map.json this has been resolved. Tested it and the automatic reference feature works as intended.

@Novem_Linguae I believe this feature leads to unexpected redirect notifications due to https://www.mediawiki.org/wiki/Extension:MassMessage#Configuration_parameters -> $wgNamespacesToConvert = [ NS_USER => NS_USER_TALK ];
Many mass message lists just include the user name instead of directly linking to the user talk page. I just send a test message to myself -> https://test.wikipedia.org/wiki/User_talk:Johannes_Richter_(WMDE) which automatically got the following text attached: (This message was sent to User:Johannes Richter (WMDE) and is being posted here due to a redirect.)

As mentioned in our team meeting: We should change the onboarding tooltip link to https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Special:MyLanguage/WMDE_Technical_Wishes/Sub-referencing (instead of linking to the VE section of the page) because people reading the tooltip likely want to learn more about the feature in general (as opposed to the link in T403694 where people likely want to learn more about VE usage).
Moving back given that the issue occurs again with the revert in T356471#11175267 / T404421
I removed the Tech News entry because the change got reverted https://meta.wikimedia.org/w/index.php?title=Tech%2FNews%2F2025%2F38&diff=29259620&oldid=29254527

Thanks, everything works as expected.

Seems to be solved by T356471#11160318, I can no longer reproduce the bug on beta.

We'll work on the order of name= and details= in T389363: Fix attribute order round-tripping for sub-references (dirty diff) and use this task for the bug of VE changing <references /> to <references></references> if the wikitext contains sub-references.
Decided to close this task for now as it's not a bug but rather a feature request. We'll look at this at a later point again.

@Badak_Jawa you need to follow https://www.mediawiki.org/wiki/Citoid/Enabling_Citoid_on_your_wiki which requires setting up the https://www.mediawiki.org/wiki/VisualEditor/Citation_tool.
It seems your project already has https://id.wikiquote.org/wiki/Templat:Cite_book and https://id.wikiquote.org/wiki/Templat:Cite_web, I recommend updating them with the latest version from English Wikipedia + the relevant documentation including template data. If you don't know how to do that, you could just export everything you need from English Wikipedia und import the content to Indonesian Wikiquote.
Once you've set up both templates correctly, you need to create MediaWiki:Cite-tool-definition.json and MediaWiki:Citoid-template-type-map.json (e.g. like this: https://mos.wikipedia.org/wiki/MediaWiki:Cite-tool-definition.json / https://mos.wikipedia.org/wiki/MediaWiki:Citoid-template-type-map.json). Creating those pages will enable the automatic reference feature.

I know this a bug, but as a user sending a mass message, it's also a feature: My mass messages usually direct users to leave replies / feedback on a linked project/talk page, but some users nevertheless just reply below the mass message. If I want to monitor all of my mass messages to make sure I don't miss any of those direct replies, I just need to subscribe to one of the messages in order to be subscribed to all of them.
