Thanks a lot for the response!

I would be willing to work on this, but I would need some guidance around where to start.

This simple python script did the trick for me, it would be very helpful for readers of wikivoyage to be able to get a KML (and view it!). Most hikes start with downloading the trail for offline use.

Some additional information: several trails also have points of interest included in the trail. Would it be a good plan to switch the data format to KML? This could include both the sections as well as the points of interest.

It would be quite valuable to have this. At the moment, there's a large number of good quality hiking trails available in OpenStreetMap. Right now, several providers that leverage OpenStreetMap (read: a thin layer on top of OpenStreetMap data) offer trail guides using this data. If a functionality can be made to display superroutes from OpenStreetMap, those could then be incorporated into Wikivoyage articles which describe the trail, offering a similar quality, but free, alternative. For most of these, the articles are already there, the map (i.e. trail data) is missing. Some examples:

That would also explain why the Kungsleden winter trail also showed up. It was tagged with the wikidata key as well. I've created a superroute for both the winter and summer trail in OSM, as well as updated the Kungsleden summer trail with the relevant stages.

Interestingly, it does seem to work for the Appalachian Trail, which is also a superroute: https://en.wikivoyage.org/wiki/Appalachian_Trail

That looks like the same issue indeed. I would guess so, if you phrase it like that, the issue/ticket should be "Display superroutes in Kartographer". Does this mean that changing the type alone would fix the problem here? I.e., does it already work with superroutes?
