I agree that the dropdown instructions are clear; perhaps if there was an icon associated with each option in the dropdown in the Topics dialog, and we displayed that icon on the Suggested Edits module next to the topic selection indicator, that would provide enough of a visual cue to the user to remember what is going on with the topics.

@KStoller-WMF Yes I’m happy with that approach. I think it makes sense for the two messages to be in the same vicinity of each other on the screen.

@Tgr Sorry for the delay, just realised the visual design for the sparkline was tbc. In answer to your questions relating to the design:

Just to confirm the latest Impact Module design incorporating user and community feedback have been updated and can be found in Figma. This link will take you to the latest desktop and mobile example mockups. More detailed breakdowns of each element can be found on that same Figma page.

I tend to agree on removing the removing the filtering from the article list and simply showing this list based on ‘most viewed’. I presented this to the design team yesterday and feedback was along the same lines – start simpler and identify cases where more options are needed later.

One issue about the recent changes I’ve made to the impact module that has been bothering me is that since we have introduced the option to select a timeframe (30 days, 60 days, last year) at the top of the page, it has introduced a bit of confusion as we also have a drop down menu/filter further down in the article list. This raises two questions for me:

Here are the latest design proposals for the impact module improvements based on community and design user testing feedback. The leftmost image shows the design that was used in user testing. The other images show three possible levels of design improvements I propose we could make...
Here are the design mocks showing the ability to configure the statistics timeframe...

Thanks for highlighting this @Iniquity!

I agree that we need some form of highlighting, as if the module is in the viewport window then the anchor won’t necessarily draw enough attention to it.
Jul 19 2022
I’ve reached out to others in the design team to collect examples of where we use similar highlight patterns to bring attention to a specific element on the page. A couple I’ve identified include:

Thanks for the comments @alexhollender_WMF and yes I think these are valid arguments. Also, given that the article sticky header has no primary button then I think that is a good reason not to include one on the Talk page sticky header.
So to confirm the design recommendations would be to:
Jun 23 2022
Regarding the question of button styling, I would propose either of these two options:
Thanks @bmartinezcalvo. That’s the branch merged and the new icons published.
@alexhollender_WMF That would be my preferred decision – not bolding ‘Talk’. Do you have any thoughts on this yourself Alex?

@alexhollender_WMF Thanks again for building this fantastic prototype Alex. Following on from our chat the other day I just wanted to note my thoughts here for reference:
Jun 6 2022
Based on the additional complexity of the namespace and the potential for issues relating to system font heights, on reflection I think it might be best to drop the styling of the ‘Talk:’ element of the namespace and leave it as it is.

Thanks for this @bmartinezcalvo and for explaining so clearly.
May 13 2022
A couple of options to propose.
Thanks for exploring this in more detail @Sarai-WMDE! I agree with all your points and also happy with Fira Code as our choice of monospace font.
May 9 2022
This looks good to me @bmartinezcalvo! All makes sense in terms of the methodology of the colour choice. I’ve no additional additions or changes to make so all good to go ahead with using the covers.
May 6 2022
Hi all. I decided to take a bit of a step back on this one and try to get a more holistic view of the problem.
May 3 2022
Hi all. Just coming back to this after a while – apologies for the delay.

Thanks for sharing @bmartinezcalvo and for the detailed explanation. Your proposal sounds like a good idea to me :)

Thanks for your comments @Pginer-WMF and I take on your point that requiring font installation for most users is probably an unnecessary barrier, especially when there are other out-of-the box choices for Figma.
Mar 29 2022
Thanks @RHo. Yes sorry that was quite a subjective ‘con’ on my part and should really have been more of an observation :)
Mar 28 2022
Hi all. I chatting with @Volker_E last week about my work on the desktop improvements project and he suggested I should share the latest toolbar designs I’ve been working on for the updates to the new Vector skin. This following image shows a comparison of the current toolbar with the new proposed design:

Thanks for flagging @alexhollender_WMF. The design should work with either of those elements shown or not. When I’m preparing more mock-ups I’ll be sure to include a variety of combinations of the page title elements.
Thanks for your comments @Pginer-WMF, I hadn’t realised that the use of Arial was an issue on Linux and Android.
Mar 22 2022
Thanks @iamjessklein. It’s a good point and I do think we should be asking ourselves that about icons more often – Does this icon really help a user understand an action? If not, do we really need an icon? I also think there is a good argument for having a single Edit icon.
Mar 21 2022
Hi all. After a bit of consideration, here’s my suggested proposal:
Mar 18 2022
Thanks for this @bmartinezcalvo!
Hi @Prtksxna. I was going to pick this up if that’s okay with you? Is there an interactive prototype of the IP reveal I can look at?
Thanks for your comments @bmartinezcalvo. I’ll respond to most of them in Figma but regarding the typography I chose to use Helvetica Neue and Georgia as this is what we use on our project covers and most closely aligns with what we use on site. The Foundation website itself uses Helvetica Neue and Georgia.
Mar 17 2022
No problem @bmartinezcalvo. They are on my list to do but low priority at the moment. Will message you once they’re done
Mar 15 2022
@alexhollender_WMF @ovasileva Here are some of my visual design proposals for the elements defined as in-scope. The images are annotated but I’ve briefly described the changes below too, and in most cases the images show the proposed design beside the current one.
Feb 15 2022
Hi @RHo @kostajh @cmadeo. I had a look at making it smaller but I didn’t have much luck due to the amount of vector points in the original illustration. To drive the file size down I think we would need to simplify the graphic a little bit. I made an attempt and removed some of the pages, increased the size of the others, and moved things around a bit. This managed to get the SVG down to 57kb but you do lose a bit of definition in the heart shape.

Updated icon SVG:
Those are looking great. One thing is, that the recentChanges RTL version features a wrongly directed edit pencil though, it should be a right-hander pencil, even though it's on the left (majority of right handers win here).
Jan 31 2022
Hi all. Apologies for coming late to this. I agree with the consensus that illustrations work better than icons – at this scale they require a bit more detail than our icons afford.
Jan 28 2022
Thanks again all for the comments.
Jan 27 2022
Hi all. So my personal opinion is that the icon works better without bullets. With these kind of compound icons which have modifier elements then I think it is best to keep the number of visual elements within the whole icon to a minimum to prevent visual noise.
Jan 25 2022
No problem @alexhollender. I’ll take a look.
That all makes sense to me @bmartinezcalvo
