I see your point, but we did have the automated functionality on Wikitravel. Not sure how it's coded, but it works well:

I'm not convinced this is necessary. The use case on Wikivoyage is exclusively for the project-space page about the banners themselves. That kind of one-off exception seems like a poor basis for a change to the module itself.

This may be the bug that pushes me to actually get into MediaWiki development. How hard can it be?

Oh, furthermore, the current pagename doesn't need to be displayed in the breadcrumb trail, since it appears immediately adjacent within the header.
Actually, there's no need to keep a stack of previous placenames. All disambiguators should be redundant within the context of a breadcrumb trail; they can just all be ignored.

It just seems like something useful, following the precedent of printed books. But perhaps our articles are better analogized as chapters rather than as entire books, obviating the need for TOCs unless printing several articles.
I'm fine with the banners not printing, as they're largely decorative and would be a waste of paper, we do need to at least print the article title and some sort of table of contents.

Well I've been looking for a way to exercise my developer's chops by getting into MW coding, maybe this would be a good entry point.
