I wrote the code for this and tested it, it worked great in the beta mobile viewer (?mmvBeta=1) but not in the legacy. Then I saw this:

The MobileFrontend extension provides its own implementation of MultimediaViewer.
On mobile we do not load the legacy desktop viewer. Image clicks fall through to the MobileFrontend lightbox (the "#/media/" overlay MinervaNeue registers), which is what the carousel routes to. See T427679.

I think one of the questions that needs to be asked here is, are many of these files really needed? Some may have educational value, but there are others that provide no information at all. I often use WikiShootMe to review and categorize images with coordinates in my country, and sometimes I find images taken from the ISS that contain nothing but darkness.

T427957 proves that they are ignoring the concerns expressed here (maybe they didn't even read them) and have already moved on to "decorating the interface". I feel like I'm talking to a wall.
