Nosferattus added a comment to T423548: Page images disappearing on edit.

I see the same problem in both Firefox and Chrome on MacOS, logged in or logged out, including in safe mode (safemode=1). I don't see any JS console errors. The problem is consistent and always happens when I load the page editor.

Nosferattus added a comment to T420291: iNaturalist2Commons user script can't load image thumbnails from iNaturalist any more due to Content Security Policy.

@sbassett - I think so. All of iNaturalist's free license images are hosted on Amazon AWS. I'm not 100% sure they all use inaturalist-open-data.s3.amazonaws.com, but that seems to be the case from my spot checks. We can try just adding that to the allow-list and then follow-up if necessary.

Nosferattus added a comment to T420146: Content Security Policy now breaks use of iNaturalist API on Commons.

Probably we just need to add "https://api.inaturalist.org" to whatever whitelist is being used in that console error.

Nosferattus added a comment to T391173: Hide legend when there is only one series in a chart.

Well, I'm not really picky about whether there is a showLegend option or the legend is just removed by default for single series charts. I support whatever option is the easiest and quickest to implement.

Maybe it could be modified to check for the Index namespace as well. Probably best not to worry about the Page namespace since 1 djvu file might be included in hundreds of Pages. The bot would also need to be configured to post to the Index_talk namespace.

Nosferattus added a comment to T54647: MediaWiki images and image pages are not being indexed properly by external search engines.

If I remember, the WMF registered all the sites with Google Search Console at some point, so it should be possible to troubleshoot the problem (at least for Google specifically) via the Google Search Console.

Nosferattus added a comment to T362328: [L] Improve the date field in describe step of upload wizard.

@Cparle - There is a bunch of code already written for translating dates into Wikidata inception datetimes. See:
https://github.com/multichill/toollabs/blob/40bb7b9b838998d7ac1479d045914dcaab642847/bot/wikidata/rkdimages_importer.py#L414

It's all Python, but the important parts are just RegEx and complicated if/else trees. Hopefully some of the logic could be translated.

Nosferattus added a comment to T261764: Depicts auto-suggest should filter out academic articles and disambiguation pages.

According to T265187, the only way to effectively solve this bug would be to add a new parameter to the action=wbsearchentities Wikidata API endpoint that allowed filtering out certain categories of entities.

Nosferattus reopened T261764: Depicts auto-suggest should filter out academic articles and disambiguation pages as "Open".

This is not the same bug as T265187. This bug is still a problem, while T265187 is moot. See T265187 for useful implementation notes though.

Nosferattus added a comment to T355914: Change default image thumbnail size.

@Ladsgroup: Please excuse me if I'm wrong, but I don't see how those statistics are related to what I suggested. I read those statistics previously, and even quote some of them in my post, but I don't think they answer the question of how changing the default thumbnail size would affect thumbnail generation. Of those 1580 hits/second (14360 x 11%), how many already have 250px thumbnail versions? 10%? 90%? Do we have any idea or are we just assuming the number is low?

I was able to get it to work! It seems you have to access the content from the specific domain name https://www-sciencedirect-com.wikipedialibrary.idm.oclc.org/ rather than the regular https://www.sciencedirect.com/. I was trying to use an existing URL for the paper after going though the Wikipedia Library, but this didn't work. Thanks for helping me get it to work and sorry to waste your time!

A lot of the discussion here is based on the assumption that we don't already have 250px thumbnails for most images:

Nosferattus added a comment to T191802: [Epic] Determine a strategy to store files between 5 and 100 GB.

Personally, I think 5 GiB is plenty. Our purpose is education, not entertainment. We don't need 8K videos to explain how mitochondria work. 480p works fine. 1080p is probably overkill. And 4320p (8K) is just totally unnecessary. What use case is excluded by requiring that people downsize giant video files?
