Any news on this? While enabling syntax highlighting itself by default on enwiki is blocked on a few smaller issues issues, there don't seem (to me at least) to be any blockers for globally enabling the colour changes.

Since both 1.35 and a compatible SMW version has been released, as far as I can tell this is no longer stalled (feel free to correct me if I'm wrong)

I would like to note that there are valid use-cases for editing talk pages without creating sections (especially when creating one) - for example, adding templates (eg WikiProject templates/assessments or certain maintenance templates), configuring archival bots or (in some cases) formatting comments.
