Ah, apologies, I didn’t view the original report. I see it happens only when TOC is auto-generated my Mediawiki, and problem disappears when TOC is positioned with TOC or FORCETOC.

There's a duplicate task here (T307735). Their issue may be resolved?

What MediaWiki and Cargo version was in use at the time this was created? I created an account on your wiki today to test it out and can't replicate the issue. I see you're MediaWiki was recently updated and Special:Version has the following for current versions:

This is still an issue, it also occurs in MediaWiki 1.35.6 and cargo 3.2 latest version downloaded today, June 24 2022 via the gitclone instructions. I noticed OPs MW version has changed, and updated it a while back, it has since changed again to 1.38.1 (the problem seems to have existed for several Cargo versions).

Yeah and it's a fresh install with pages imported... Because we first had an issue with TemplateData not being recognized. After exporting all pages to xml and re-importing into a clean DB that issue was solved, so we assumed a DB issue. So here I go again, with another fresh install, no extensions and no pages imported this time, to see if I can replicate again.

Having at least partial search be usable has been requested here https://phabricator.wikimedia.org/T203193 since right now you can't even use TemplateData search to do a partial search via template name. I'm not exactly sure if I need to create a separate task for the ask you mention or if adding it to the existing one is sufficient (I'm not a programmer).

Template data should ideally also allow for searching via template data description, so it can link up and TemplateWizard can subsequently search via TemplateData partial search and TemplateData description text.

Is there something else required to get this working that maybe isn't listed in the documentation? Like a search extension not included with MediaWiki?

I'm not sure how to close this, I've come to the conclusion that it's our Database.
