I really don't know anything about it, but would it be possible to develop a distributed-computing platform to deal with cpu time for video conversion? This seems to me to be the kind of thing that our communities would be happy to 'lease out' their cpus for.

If this is the case, then under the user preferences for commons upload wizard (in user accounts) can there be a 'more' tab for the 516 options? Then the ESA staffer could set it up once and then never have to think about it again, which would mean he'd be more inclined to use commons than flickr for uploading content.

What was the issue originally? No transcodes at all? Or not all of them?

Yes, I've shot the servers, but now there's a legal issue about the rights that I'm waiting to resolve. Needless to say it's frustrating. I'll let you know as soon as they are up.

@Steinsplitter - Yes, actually I'll be photographing (and hopefully shooting video of) the servers on Dallas on the way back from Wikimania. I'll have that media online asap.
