Seems that the more that this is investigated, the more complex the implementation and impact becomes, so thank you everyone for helping move the debate as this wish has been on our radar for months. I don't feel too strongly about any proposal though as an avid reader, I personally find the status quo confusing.
@OpenDEM
Thank you for pinging us! This is still very much a top priority in the wishlist space - it has many dependencies for reviews, which @Amdrel is working through. These just take time and iteration since this isn't a space that many reviewers may be working on regularly, so it has to compete with their other commitments. We are very thankful for all who have been helping the wish become a reality this year, and look forward to its completion.
In case there's something actionable for others to help with, we will keep you and others in mind to help get things done. :)

@Doc_James that's a good point - I also thought that while recently uploading a picture in Commons.
Given that home address is the most egregious example, that could be explicitly listed in the string and I wouldn't be against making this warning box more attention-grabbing given the sensitivity. @JSengupta-WMF - could we propose something more in line with other similar compelling type messages that we wouldn't want users to ignore?
@Doc_James absolutely, adding to the toolbar should be the bare minimum and I wonder what else might be possible to make them more visible as the toolbar options grow

@TheDJ exactly, thank you for putting it into better practical words than me. This sounds like a much more realistic short-term step to promote all the existing user tools without duplicating any of the work that has been done already by many. Maybe @JSengupta-WMF and others have some ideas of where and how to include a clear set of pointers to other available tools?

Thank you @JSengupta-WMF and @Doc_James for the feedback and proposals!
I've pinged the domain experts' manager at the Foundation to chime in, and if others here have feedback on the UX proposal, please feel free to comment here in order for us to iterate as needed.
@TheDJ @Doc_James - thanks so much for your feedback! This is a tricky wish as it covers so many ideas.
At a high level I agree that we should have a good consistent, recognizable, and usable place to have these tools instead of spreading them around. Before significant time is invested to determine 1) UX in a sensitive workflow that would be overhauled by so many features and also 2) dependencies on tool investment (and/or APIs to leverage existing work), it would be helpful to take a step back and:

@Doc_James Those would be great to add as they're still open - we haven't planned anything for them.
Ah yeah that's true, didn't think about that. I'll rename!

Sounds good to me! When the 3D wish work wraps up, we can also highlight related tickets and ideas for more visibility.
Mon, Jul 20
@Bugreporter2 yes, just closed it - thank you for the reminder! I'll post a summary soon.
We decided to merge this into the other related wish! I'll post a summary of all the work that's been done there.

Ah, I updated the wrong wish. This isn't related to a wish, so I reverted that. Thanks for flagging!

@Doc_James thank you for sharing this! I wasn't aware of this tool to remove GPS location data from images until now and had only bookmarked this Phab ticket, so I thought there weren't any ongoing attempts.
Have you managed to get in touch with a potential reviewer at WMF to make changes to the upload wizard? By chance I recently connected with Amanda, who pointed out to me that you and others have started this.

Ah thank you @Doc_James - I didn't know about this!

Thank you both @Mimurawil and @Soda !

Right, I know you're Sohom. :) I just asked if we should double-check with others about how the validation works server-side (since I don't know). If you're confident with your understanding of how it works, then we can move forward with your suggestion.
Jun 11 2026
Thank you! Should we double-check this with someone else? Maybe a quick ping to the folks in the Unsupported Tools Working Group who recommended prioritizing uploads?
This is being worked on by @Amdrel with the support of our UX team and Bawolff, who just helped review a PR: https://github.com/wpmed/croptool2/pull/9

It's a very visible user feature, so it's important to make testing and providing feedback easier, but what about the potential security and data implications?
Would it be possible to still validate data server-side upon submission?
Jun 5 2026
Just for visibility if anyone is interested:
Jun 4 2026
Ah sorry about that, this was a mistake somehow since I already filed this request with the form filled out in T426106. I was filing various other tickets yesterday and was considering a sub-task for Image Editor, but didn't in the end and probably just accidentally submitted.

One pending PR: https://github.com/wpmed/croptool2/pull/9 (need to identify a reviewer)
Some specific questions from @Mimurawil and maybe @JSengupta-WMF has feedback too:

The original author of this ticket is no longer at the Foundation, but we're looking into scoping this. It seems the original acceptance criteria is still relevant.
Thanks for following up! If something similar happens again, I think it's fine to open a new ticket with whatever relevant information you have, and someone can investigate.
May 15 2026
@Grand-Duc were you able to reproduce?
May 12 2026
We filed another ticket which you're free to follow: https://phabricator.wikimedia.org/T426106
Thank you @Amdrel !

Thanks @JSengupta-WMF @Amdrel @Prototyperspective for all the feedback and work! The CCBY filter is now available. We'll close this and given the scope of the outstanding channel upload feature, I have filed a spinoff wish to continue that another time: W523

As a loose workaround when closing on W507, I tagged all the supporters to let them know and asked them to vote for the canonical wish. To echo the point from @Nardog above, another user (Paloi Sciurala) also stated:

Thank you! I filed a follow up task: T418575
And the spinoff wish for more visibility: https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Community_Wishlist/W512
Thank you very much!

Ah thank you for doing that! I was also confused why I couldn't find her in Phabricator and was going to ask in our 1:1 later today. I appreciate it!
Feb 23 2026
Just curious if there are suggested next steps here? @Niharika
I've listed the wish as in progress, but let us know if that's not the case.
