//Which input mode – `source` or `visual` – should people be presented with when they click "Reply" links?//
This task is about running a test on our four partner wikis to help answer this question.
More context and details below.
We are considering all of this with the following principle in mind: **changes should be minimally invasive and strive to honor existing community conventions and agreements.**

=== Context
Version 2.0 of the Replying tool will introduce a `visual` mode to the text input area.
This creates a question: //Which input mode – `source` or `visual` – should people be presented with when they click "Reply" links?//
There are some people [1][2] for whom we are relatively confident about which text input mode they expect to see because they have explicitly expressed as much in their [Preferences](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Special:Preferences#mw-prefsection-editing).
However, for the people who have not made an explicit choice about their preferred editing interface [3] and neither has the wiki at-large [4], we would like to run a test to determine which interface is more likely to lead people to publish the comment they want to publish.
The table below is an attempt to represent the above in a more visual way.
| **Account status** | **Wiki configuration** | **User's editing mode [preference](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Special:Preferences#mw-prefsection-editing)** | *User edit count** | **Reply text input default** |
| --- | --- | --- | --- | ---
| Logged in | two edit tabs | no preference set | ≥1 | last editor used
| Logged in | two edit tabs | no preference set | 0 | //???//
| Logged in | N/A | `visual` | ≥0 | `visual`
| Logged in | N/A | `source` | ≥0 | `source`
| Logged in | N/A | `Show me both editor tabs` | 0 | //???//
| Logged in | N/A | `Show me both editor tabs` | ≥1 | last editor used
| Logged out | two edit tabs |N/A | N/A | //???//
| Logged out | default `visual` |N/A | N/A | show `visual`
| Logged out | default `source` |N/A | N/A | show `source`
=== Test details
We would like to split the people on wikis that have not explicitly set editor preferences (see cells with //???// above) into two groups: Group 1 and Group 2.
Group 1 should see the `visual` text input mode when they click a "Reply" link.
Group 2 should see the `source` text input mode when they click a "Reply" link.
For each of these groups we would like to know:
- % of people who click a Reply link and start typing a comment
- % of people who click a "Reply" link and publish a comment
- % of people who click a "Reply" link and actively abandon the comment they started typing
- % of people who switch to a different text input mode and publish a comment
=== Partner wiki article editor default configurations

| French | `two edit tabs` | `two edit tabs`
| Hungarian | `VE` | `VE`
=== Open questions
- [ ] @Mayakp.wiki: Before committing to working on this we would like to know...**What level of effort would be involved in implementing what is described above?**
=== Done
- [ ] "Open questions" are resolved
---
1. People who always expect to see the `visual` text input are those people who have the following Preference set: `Preferences` > `Editing` > `Editing Mode: "Always give me the visual editor if possible."`
2. People who always expect to see the `source` text input mode are those people who have the following Preference set: `Preferences` > `Editing` > `Editing Mode: "Always give me the source editor if possible"`
3. E.g. logged out users
4. E.g. editors on two-tab wikis
