Lead: @apaskulin
Advising: @KBach
This is a parent task for a set of updates planned for July-September 2023.
## Goals
Create a shared understanding of the state of mediawiki.org between contributors.
- [ ] The pages in the Project namespace on mediawiki.org are up to date.
- [ ] A person wanting to contribute to mediawiki.org can understand how the site is currently organized.
## Priority
Aligns with [WE3.2](https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Wikimedia_Foundation_Annual_Plan/2023-2024/Draft/Product_%26_Technology/OKRs#WE3:_Knowledge_Platform): Good documentation is a key component of being able to contribute code effectively. By understanding the current state of the docs, we can identify areas for improvement that will help improve the experience of contributors.
## Stakeholders
- mediawiki.org contributors, including admins and other contributors with advanced permissions
Since this project aims to document the existing state of mediawiki.org, I don’t expect to need extensive consultation, but feedback on and help with these plans is always welcome.
## Project plan
- [ ] Phase 1: Determine scope
- [x] Audit pages in the Project namespace, and identify rough todos. (I reviewed all pages in the Project namespace, triaged them by category, marked some as historical or for deletion, and identified needed updates on pages related to mediawiki.org.)
- [ ] Published a condensed version of this audit to this task
- [x] Review open tasks in MediaWiki-Documentation and Documentation, and identify related requests. (I didn't find anything related to project pages, but please let me know if I missed something.)
- [ ] Define a scope for the rest of the project, and update this project plan
- [ ] Phase 2: Page updates
- To be determined based on the outcome of phase 1
### Work-in-progress scope
To be moved into subtasks once finalized
- [ ] Clean up references to importing help content from Meta. It looks like this project is completed and no longer needs to be listed as an active project. See Project:Tasks and Project:Help.
- [ ] Clean up references to the GNU Free Documentation License since it seems to no longer be applicable to mediawiki.org. (Find some way to verify this. I found only [this edit](https://www.mediawiki.org/w/index.php?title=Project%3ACopyrights&diff=262877&oldid=255975) and nothing here in Phabricator describing the transition away from GFDL.) See Project:About, Project:PD help, and Project:General disclaimer.
- [ ] Disambiguate policies, essays, and information pages. See Project:Flat namespace, Project:Good page name, Project:Policy, Category:Policy, Template:Not policy, Project:Namespaces, Project:Schools of thought on deletion, and others.
- [ ] Update Project:Categories with a summary of categories and best practices
- [ ] Clarify the status of the transition process described on Project:Language policy
- [ ] Update Project:Help to link to pages in the Project namespace relevant to mediawiki.org
- [ ] Create a page to document gadget use on mediawiki.org
