This parent task is created to unify work discussed in T215661, T215660, and T215656. All three of those tasks are about altering Special:CreateAccount so that users have increased clarity around why they are entering an email address and how to confirm it. Note that all this work will only be piloted on Czech, Korean, and Vietnamese Wikipedias. If we see positive results, we will discuss how to allow other wikis to incorporate these changes.
The changes discussed in the three listed tasks are:
* Indicate to user they will receive a verification email.
* Indicate to user benefits of providing email address during account creation.
* Update email field label with more encouraging language.
Those changes should be made in concert so there is a unified design. Here is a proposed set of changes that incorporates the needs from all three of those tasks. There are some open questions for engineers here. After some discussion on this task, we can harden into exact specifications.
* Desktop
** Change the word "optional" to "recommended" in the label for the email field.
** When a user is entering an email in the email field, we want to warn them that a verification email is coming. Would it be possible to use the "error" span to do this? That element currently slides down from the username field when there is a username already in use. Would it be possible to have a similar element that slides down from the email field, yellow text on yellow background, that reads, "Please look for an email from us to verify your address." When this element slides down, everything below it should slide also, including the text in the next bullet point. This element should slide down when the user clicks into the box, not when they click out.
** Add text underneath the email field that reads, "Email is required to recover your account if you lose your password." See T215660 for visual guidance on the font and size of the text.
** The paragraph explaining the CAPTCHA is taking up too much room, especially now that we want to add other text and opt-ins to the page. We should remove the paragraph that reads "To protect the wiki against automated account creation, we kindly ask you to enter the words that appear below in the box (more info):" To replace the function of that paragraph, we should add a parenthetical to the next line so that it reads "CAPTCHA Security check ([[ https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Special:Captcha/help | what is this? ]])"
* Mobile
** ~~Change the placeholder text in the email field from "Enter your email address" to "Enter your email address (recommended)"~~
** When a user is entering an email in the email field, we want to warn them that a verification email is coming. Mobile doesn't seem to have the "error" span like desktop has. Would it be possible to add something like that, yellow text on yellow background, that reads, "Please look for an email from us to verify your address". When this element slides down, everything below it should slide also, including the text in the next bullet point. This element should slide down when the user clicks into the box, not when they click out.
** Add text underneath the email field that reads, "Email is required to recover your account if you lose your password." See T215656 for visual guidance on the font and size of the text.
