**Title**
Research at the Service of Free Knowledge
**Abstract**
With 15 billion monthly pageviews, 10 million monthly edits, and
almost 50 million articles across 300+ languages, Wikipedia has become
a canonical part of the Free Knowledge ecosystem: not only by enabling
people to have access to knowledge, but also by empowering them to
participate in the discourse of writing the sum of all human
knowledge. In this presentation, I define the space Wikipedia operates
in today and position it not only in terms of what it directly brings
to the readers and editors on-site, but also in terms of the
technological advancements it has made possible to an array of
non-profit and for-profit companies. I will describe the role of
research for Wikipedia and present the research directions and key
global questions the Research team at Wikimedia Foundation works on
today.
