I believe that, as it is currently, the only criteria one can specify in an image search are: who uploaded, when or file size. For many image searches this is way useless. One criterion that could be easily introduced as an option is Category. All image files, in fact all media files, already know and display which pages link to each file. It should be a relatively easy matter to configure an image search to return results restricted to a specified category, as the wiki will also know which categories those linking pages belong to. Then, fifty thumbnails at a time in the category i am interested in will be all RELEVANT to my inquiry. This can reduce search returns by 90% or more, no small triumph in a big wiki.
If this is already possible, i and my wiki admin have not found it. If it is currently in development, great, i'd like to hear about how it's going. If neither, it looks to me like something that wsould be both easy and useful.
