# Background
The homepage of the Library Card was last redesigned as part of our [[ https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Library_Card_platform/Authentication-based_access | Authentication-based access ]] rollout (T230524). We didn't spend substantial effort on this, largely getting it to a point where it was functional. Since that rollout we've received a wide range of feedback and had a chance to think about what works and what doesn't, and now wish want to update the page to make the calls-to-action and user workflows clearer.
Updates to the homepage can also tie in improvements to the top navigation bar so we have a consistently designed homepage experience, even if the My Library improvements (T268347) don't happen until later.
For the homepage we want to:
- Make it clearer that users should log in so we can verify their Library Bundle eligibility and ensure the rest of their experiences on the site match those.
- Be explicit that logging in happens via Wikipedia/OAuth; users don't need to create a new account on the tool.
- Ensure we have sensible locations for search bar(s) to be integrated.
- Clarify when a link will take user away from the site - external links blend in with other internal links in the current version.
- Present searching via a search bar as the primary action users should take
- Ensure that users are aware there is other content, not included via search, available elsewhere on the tool.
For the navigation bar we want to:
- Highlight links to My Library in a more obvious way, instead of hiding it behind a drop-down.
- Reword 'The Wikipedia Library Card Platform' into something more digestible, perhaps 'The Wikipedia Library' or 'Library Card platform'.
# Mockups
@Prtksxna has lent us some time and proposed some improvements at https://miro.com/app/board/o9J_lf7i-_Q=/.
HTML is available at: {F33920512}
**Further refinements to these mockups:**
- We want to merge the blue 'log in using Wikipedia to see...' bar near the bottom up to be under the Library Bundle so we can highlight that as something users should do to verify their eligibility.
- When a user has logged in, the primary blue 'Log in' button should instead be a 'My Library' button.
# Open questions
A few open questions remain about this mockup before implementation:
- Where will the search bar(s) integrate?
- We could have a persistent search bar in the navigation bar, then one front-and-centre on the homepage (maybe with extra toggles)
- Does the order of the 'Our partners' and 'Library Bundle' sections make sense? How can we best explain that some content is available right now, and others require an application.
- 'Partners' probably doesn't make sense to usersWhile the visual style of this mockup is clearly an improvement on the current design, is there a better description for us in places where we need to describe collections?
we would like to explore more a fundamental rethink of the layout and content of this page.
