I tried launching some functionality for mobile by making use of a default gadget, but apparently (likely because mobile target replaces/modifies the site module), this is not possible. This is inconsistent and unexpected.

This is inconsistent and unexpected. [edit] I spent some more time on this on test2 and figure out that this also doesn't work when Minerva is used in desktop target mode.
