It's the typical example of a well-written essay that ends up listing magic numbers as fact. The paper is well-written and makes several intellectually appealing points, with interesting parallels and analogies, but it doesn't back anything up with research data. None of the ideas presented in the paper are attempted to be proven. Worse, they are presented as matter-of-fact truth. The paper ends with a list of arbitrary recommendations about response time limits for equally arbitrary task types.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\n\u003cp\u003eSome of the recommendations are so original\/bizarre they give pause, such as the idea that errors should be delayed on purpose to let users give up on their train of thought naturally, rather than being abruptly stopped by an instantaneous error. Some ideas described in the paper are intriguing and possibly worth exploring, but would require actual research to be validated, particularly when they go against all common practices seen on the web today.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\n\u003cp\u003eThe only research data the paper references to illustrate a point is seemingly from \u003cem\u003eS. S. Stevens, "Handbook of Experimental Psychology - chapter 32, Time Perception by H. Woodrow"\u003c\/em\u003e. It describes that an experiment was made to study how well people can differentiate different timespans. People had to listen to series of audio clicks, and were to tell which delays between clicks were shorter or longer. People's natural ability to distinguish between timespans was tested this way. It mentions that the same test was performed with light pulses and yielded the same results. Interestingly, the accuracy peak (where people could determine shorter\/longer duration with an accuracy of 90%) was for delays between 0.6 and 0.8 seconds.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\n\u003cp\u003eUnfortunately I couldn't get hold of that book chapter to get the details of the experiment. But even accepting these results as valid, it doesn't seem to be very usable in the context of web performance. When asking people to do something like this, they are focusing on the delays and not a human task. Miller's introduction makes a good point focusing on what people are trying to achieve through their compter interaction. Audio clicks and pulses of light that people concentrate on are quite different from computer interactions. It's hard to say that the fact that people can differentiate durations between sounds from 0.6 and 0.8 seconds translates into, say, the time it takes to load a web page. Or that a shorter time it takes to load an individual web page results in greater user satisfaction. People might perceive time differently in that context, making the reference figures obtained with audio clicks irrelevant.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\n\u003cp\u003eThe first part of the paper that describes a model of human task completion was refreshing to read, as it's a good reminder that people are trying to achieve something when interacting with a computer much greater than the fine-grained interactions, and the ultimate goal is to get out of the way when facilitating this greater task. A lot of people were still on dialup at that time. It would be interesting to see if more recent studies have been conducted, particularly on mobile, since these older studies are only about desktop use of the web.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\n\u003cp\u003eAfter the literature review, this paper concludes that everything cited so far is mostly magic numbers and sets out to perform an empirical study.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\n\u003cp\u003eThe study focuses on web-savvy users asked to perform a task if information retrieval on a given browser interface, about the same topic, on high-speed internet (\u003ca href=\"\/T1\" class=\"phui-tag-view phui-tag-type-object \" data-sigil=\"hovercard\" data-meta=\"0_2\"\u003e\u003cspan class=\"phui-tag-core-closed\"\u003e\u003cspan class=\"phui-tag-core phui-tag-color-object\"\u003eT1\u003c\/span\u003e\u003c\/span\u003e\u003c\/a\u003e) on a walled garden website. It had 70 participants. Half of them had a progress bar (with ping-pong animation, no actual percentage) show up while the page was loading, the other half didn't get any progress indication. The home page had 10 links, only 7 of which worked, almost instantly. The last 3 triggered infinite waiting time. Users had to press a "stop" button to terminate the wait when navigating to those. They were asked to visit all 10 links. The time between the request being made and pressing the "stop" button was measured.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\n\u003cp\u003eWhat happened is that when first encountering a link with infinite wait, people with progress bars waited longer (38 seconds on average) than people with no progress indication (13 seconds). On the second infinite wait link they encountered, these times shortened, but people with progress bars still waited longer (17 seconds vs 4 seconds average).\u003c\/p\u003e\n\n\u003cp\u003eNow, this comparison itself is of little use to us, since page progress display is built into browsers now. It also doesn't study phenomenons we encounter now, such as the page still changing after the progress bar is done. One might wonder if people display greater patience while the browser has a progress indicator, and become impatient after that point if the page still doesn't look "ready". Are users more impatient on browsers where the built-in progress bar is really thin\/out of the way? I think it would be interesting to see if there have been any attempts to study these things on more modern environments.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\n\u003cp\u003eAs for the absolute numbers obtained in that study, I don't think they are applicable now. Considering how specific the study was, not using a real browser and happening so long ago, user expectations might have changed greatly since, even with progress display. I also find the argument that people's behavior in regards to the browser progress bar can extend to everything happening on the page a bit of a stretch. I.e. it doesn't necessarily mean that progress bars inside the web page make people more It's quite a small sample size, imho, and all with the same background, living the same lifestyle. The study finds huge differences in how participants use their phone. some barely use the browser, others use it 11 times a day. With such a wide gap in behavior it seems like the sample size is quite small to draw general conclusions.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\n\u003cp\u003eSite revisitation is studied, bookmark usage, browsing patterns, as well as the difference between native apps and the browser. They also look into where people are when they use their mobile phone and what they do while in different locations.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\n\u003cp\u003eI really didn't find much that was related to performance, which makes me wonder why this particular study was quote in the RAIL announcement, other than to prove the rather obvious point that people consume the web differently on mobile than they do on desktop. Mostly determining the threshold between feeling something is instantaneous and perceiving latency in different contexts. For hearing and touch, the threshold for perceiving latency is quoted to be between 20 and 30ms. I'm not going to look into the studies that brought those numbers, as I don't think they apply to interaction with a website. There is one study referenced where people are asked to move a rectangle on the screen with a mouse and different amount of latency were introduced. But it's extremely dated (1993).\u003c\/p\u003e\n\n\u003cp\u003eBack to the study of tactile feedback, there were only 12 test subjects. Half female half male, age range 18 to 47. They were given a modified Nokia tablet with the ability to have the display vibrate. The display vibrated on button down action. Then they introduce different latencies for when the vibration happens after touch is detected. I'm not aware of mobile devices doing this nowadays, so I don't think it's a problem worth looking into at the moment, as the idea that code on a website could have an effect on the latency of haptic feedback on the device is far-fetched.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\n\u003cp\u003eFreeform feedback from the first study makes researchers realize that consistent high latency gives the illusion of weight for the button, and they conduct a second study studying that phenomenon.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\n\u003cp\u003eThe study shows that increased latency doesn't increase typing errors. But it does increase subjective frustration\/negative view of the product. There isn't a lot of difference in terms of positive rating between 18 and 72ms latency, but it goes down significantly past that threshold, when dealing with a range of random latency between 18 and 144ms. It's hard to say if the issue in that case is high latency encountered occasionally, or the fact that the latency experienced varies widely. It would have been interesting if the study tried a consistent 144ms latency, for example. Previous essays I've reviewed so far suggested the idea that performance variance was worse that consistent bad performance. The average link-clicked-to-page-starting-to-load duration was 16.2 seconds! Unsurprisingly, the busier people are physically, the shorter the attention windows to the mobile device get. The point being that any experiment done on mobile devices will yield vastly different results in a lab setting than in real life. The study covers different timespans, including the launch, a period of performance issues, incremental improvements on those performance problems and a latter period where everything is stable and performance fully optimized.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\n\u003cp\u003eThey used synthetic testing at the most remote geographical location where their real users were based, as well as in the datacenter, to continuously measure response time on a predetermined browsing scenario within the app. This was to estimate how much of the performance was affected by real network latency. They also used server-side logging to see how long requests took to complete from the server's perspective.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\n\u003cp\u003eThe server-side percentiles history clearly show the performance issues period and the subsequent optimizations. There's a strong correlation between that and the number of performance-related complaints filed in their service desk (once fully optimized and stable, they get 0 complaints - at the peak of issues, 22 complaints per month).\u003c\/p\u003e\n\n\u003cp\u003eHaving reached this ideal situation of not getting complaints anymore, they basically take the percentiles of server response time they have at that point and set them as the new standard to aim for in their organization.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\n\u003cp\u003eI think this is a very interesting approach that could actually apply to us. Encouraging people to report performance issues on a permanent basis would be a good thermometer of how well we're doing. And I expect that improving performance significantly should move the needle on report rates, just like it did for them. Better yet, this could allow detecting spikes, anomalies in performance issue reports, that we could easily try to correlate to geography, UAs, pages reported from.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\n\u003cp\u003eIn a sense, this approach worked around the problem of not having universal performance metrics or criteria to apply to their particular situation. It was done in a lab, on a computer, and people were asked to focus on the app loading. And by having people do trial runs and be asked explicitly about loading times, it made them focus on something that people don't normally concentrate on. As the study points out itself, all participants were young, which can affect temporal perception. Page Load Time is 22ms better in terms of median, in 54% of the cases. Those objective performance improvements aren't predictors of people's subjective feedback on performance.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\n\u003cp\u003eWhile the methodology was interesting, the research doesn't consider the fact that the objective performance gains might be too small for people to perceive. A difference in the range of 20-40ms, not shown side to side, might be difficult for people to detect. Increasing RTT was an interesting thing to do, but they should have limited bandwidth as well, to see if the performance differences would have increased to the point of being more noticeable by users. I.e. metrics that capture the progression over time. They rightfully point out that SpeedIndex's greatest weakness is the computational overhead required to record video while the experiment is running, skewing the experiment's results.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\n\u003cp\u003eThey propose two new metrics, ByteIndex and ObjectIndex. Where instead of measuring visual progress, they measure bytes progress and object progress, "the SpeedIndex way". There is no above-the-fold aspect in those two new metrics.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\n\u003cp\u003eThey run an experiment on the top 100 Alexa sites, running each page 10 times to account for real internet performance variability, on Google Chrome only, driven by WebPageTest, collecting all the metrics discussed. Then they compare how they correlate. They find that the new proposed metrics correlate as highly as SpeedIndex with the basic "time instant" metrics. And that the new metrics correlate highly with SpeedIndex (more than 80% correlation).\u003c\/p\u003e\n\n\u003cp\u003eFinally, they discuss how these basic metrics could be improved to compensate for the differences between bytes and objects (not all bytes have the same impact on the page depending on their nature, eg. Still, I think those two suggested metrics have value in the sense that they capture the progression of things, and not just a snapshot of a particular event. It would be interesting to study those three metrics on a decent set of wiki pages to verify the correlation ourselves and assess whether or not any of those two novel metrics would be useful for us. And we could also explore the various improvements suggested for a more fine-tuned time-integral metric. My main takeaway is that if we design a new metric, the ability to capture progress would indeed be a valuable quality.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\n\u003cp\u003eThere is something to be said about the fact that measuring SpeedIndex affects SpeedIndex. As such, it is indeed interesting that the correlation between ObjectIndex and Start Render\/onLoad\/DOM\/TTFB is just as strong or stronger than SpeedIndex's. I think it would be interesting to explore the idea we've discussed before of decoupling the SpeedIndex recording from the browser, via an uncompressed remote X session, or better yet, recording the video feed coming out of a computer running a browser, and comparing the results to those obtained by running Browsertime\/WebPageTest on the same machine as the browser. This would allow us to measure the "ideal" SpeedIndex, and see how different it is from what we are currently collecting.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\n\u003cp\u003eFinally, one of their best suggestions, in my opinion, would be to collect a large corpus of HAR files annotated with user subjective ratings of performance, to analyze which metrics based on what's available in HAR files could correlate best with users' perceived performance. Or we could also do the same and limit ourselves to RUM metrics (which would actually make data collection easier). I think this is something where machine learning could help, particularly if we continuously feed it user feedback. Basically predicting for every measure pageload what the performance perception score would have been if a user rated The test focuses on 12 non-landing webpages from top 100 Alexa websites in France, with page sizes from O.43 to 2.88MB and number of "objects" (I assume subrequests) from 24 to 212. They filter out failed pageloads and people who didn't review at least 10 pageloads. In the end after removing more bad data, they end up looking at 3400 user ratings. They mention using the same experimental setup as their HTTP\/2 study, meaning that the pages are served by local servers and the client has cache disabled.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\n\u003cp\u003eThen they look how the ratings correlate to various "expert model" metrics. The metric with the best correlation to user ratings (85%) is ImageIndex to ATF. However, with their method I could easily see how above-the-fold content would be unchanged by a move, while below-the-fold content is affected, or broken, by the move of CSS\/JS elements in the HTML source. They start out by studying browser dependency policies through experiment, whereby they design a bunch of test pages combining the many types of possible assets on an html page, and artificially slowing some down to infer hard dependencies. They also look at the source code of browsers that are open source to complete the information they gather through theses experiments.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\n\u003cp\u003eOf course what they find out about each browser's mechanics is outdated, since the study is from 2013, but the method is interesting and could be worth reproducing for a more up-to-date view on how browsers behave nowadays.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\n\u003cp\u003eAfter this they move onto implementing a fork of Chrome 22 (then Webkit-based), which integrates their lightweight profiler designed to identify dependency-related performance bottlenecks in the critical path.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\n\u003cp\u003eThey subsequently run their profiler on 150 of the top 200 Alexa websites, with bandwidth capped at 10Mpbs. Their definition of page load time is based on the DOMLoad event, because they don't want to deal with the overhead of video recording for ATF\/SpeedIndex.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\n\u003cp\u003eOne key finding is that 35% of the time spent in the critical path for page load time is spent in computation activities, with HTML parsing being the most expensive and CSS evaluation and rendering the least (to the point of being considered negligible).\u003c\/p\u003e\n\n\u003cp\u003eAnother interesting finding is when compared cold vs hot loads, the critical path gains obtained by caching aren't proportional to the bytes saved. Eg. having 90% of cached objects only decreased page load time by 40%. This is mostly explained by the fact that most sites will cache things that aren't in the critical path better than things that are.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\n\u003cp\u003eCaching also reduces computation cost.
