Bi-directional switching (from the visual editor to the wikitext editor and back again) is expected to be deployed this week. We should update the user guide at https://www.mediawiki.org/wiki/Help:VisualEditor/User_guide to explain this in more detail.

Links to "the user guide" are always welcome in task descriptions so anybody else could in theory also contribute.
I've uploaded some of the screenshots for this to Commons (the single edit tab aspect). They are currently the first six in this search.
I uploaded images for the actual mechanics of switching today.
This might be something that is easier to understand in a video.
This is nearly done; we're trying to confirm one detail related to T123960: When switching between the wikitext and visual editors, the "Discard changes" option should require confirmation before losing all my work. It seems that confirmation is sometimes requested, but not other times.
We've sorted out the last detail: confirmation is one-way and ought to be two-way. Hopefully, the bug will be resolved and we'll need to update the documentation later, but for now, it correctly describes the actual behavior. ;-)
Also, many thanks to @John_Broughton, without whom the relevant details in the bug would still be murky in my mind.
