add User:Gnom to ops mailing list

Description

Dear Operations mailing list admins,

Please add me (lukas.mezger@gmail.com) to the ops mailing list. I've already signed an NDA in my function as a privacy Ombudsman.

The reason I'd like to join the mailing list is to discuss the energy consumption of the Wikimedia servers. I've created a page regarding this on Meta called "Environmental impact".

I am filing this Phabricator task because I was asked to do so after requesting access to the list through lists.wikimedia.org.

If the Operations mailing list is the wrong venue for this topic, I could also try to discuss my project on Wikitech-l, although it seems to have its focus on development.

Thank you very much!
Kind regards,

Lukas (User:Gnom)

Which NDA did you sign and how can your signature be verified?

I signed an NDA called "Confidentiality agreement for nonpublic information", see my talk page on Meta. I think this can be verified with the WMF legal department.

I suppose this is the wrong NDA for purposes of the Ops mailing list since there is also the "Volunteer Non-disclosure Agreement"? Sorry for the confusion.

Sorry,i'm not sure what the right process and NDA is for the list. @mark @RobH as fellow list admins, do you have advice?

I'm not entirely certain, as I was under the impression the ops list was WMF only (with Domas being the only exception). However, that seems incorrect, as there are a number of non-wikimedia.org addresses. Rather than paste private addresses in here, I've set the list to be ops read only on P2829.

So, I'm not entirely certain what NDA we need to have him sign. I did refuse the blind subscription request, as I only grant them to @wikimedia.org email addresses. I suggested that Lukas create this task so we could document the request and figure out how to process it.

I'm not sure what NDA is best, since trying to determine an NDA process hasn't proved fruitful.

The ops list has been open to non-WMF-staff with NDAs for years.

That list of volunteers was Domas for a very long time. We have the folks I put in to the paste P2829, but we have no official process for adding to the ops list. We don't have a pipeline to confirm NDA status with legal, that I am aware of. If anyone knows who in our legal department to direct NDA confirmation requests to, please let me know.

Volunteer NDA, see also, Dereckson now a swat deployer will need to be on the ops@ list.

HOWEVER, I don't think the ops@ list is the right list for this conversation, personally. Are there private things we don't want to discuss publicly about this? I'm wary of setting a precedent of "I have something to talk about with the team, get me on their list".

That would mean having to sign L2, afaict. Dereckson has done that.

+1 , maybe we can use wikitech-l for this unless there is something that can't be public.

Please start a discussion on wikitech-l. ops@ is for non-public matters only.
